I am planning to take summer session this year and wanted to know what people’s experience has been. I plan on taking 2 classes during each session, mostly for my major (English).

I know this will vary person to person, but how is the pacing and how did you find professors to be?

Also, did you have to take out loans for summer session? I know that’s the typical financial aid route for people during summer.

Any input would be appreciated!

I’m also interested in finding out what the pace of summer session would be like. I want to take CHE 118B for summer session II rather than wait all the way until winter 2013 to take it, and I’d like to know if it’s manageable.

They’re not too bad. I took one engineering and one philosophy class last summer session 1, and two engineering classes in session 2, all upper division. Although, it will likely vary on the Professor, I found that these classes were much easier and more lax than your typical quarter variety. Many of the classes (engineering) had recommended instead of mandatory homework assignments or quizzes that were placed in lieu of midterms. Personally, I think the only thing that was a bit difficult for me were all the reading assignments to keep up with in philosophy, but that’s likely because I don’t read that sort of stuff very much. I found that the quality of instruction was generally pretty good. I had two tenured professors that I was pretty familiar with, and two inexperienced phd students that really struggled to teach the material. Did not take any loans, so cannot comment on that.
