I am a New York State resident and looking for the best computer science program available in the state. I'm asking for public school because I can't afford private schools. I will be a transfer student and will be working toward getting my bachelor's degree. I will be considered an independent student with EFC = 0. Thanks!

Probably Stony Brook.

However, some private schools might be good enough with financial aid to result in a similar or lower net price compared to the SUNYs. Some possibilities which claim to meet >90% of financial need:

Barnard (if female)
Columbia
Cornell
Rochester
Union
Polytechnic Institute of NYU (not NYU proper)

Run the net price calculator on each school to check whether it can be affordable to you. If the estimate is affordable, you may want to add the school to your application list in addition to Stony Brook and other public universities in New York.

Thanks so much! By “Rochester” you mean Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or University of Rochester? Also, how do I run the “net price calculator?”

Thanks once again for your response and help!

Stony Brook. Look up “X University net price calculator.” You will need to input some of you and your family’s financial info.

University of Rochester is listed with a higher percentage of need met, though you can run the net price calculator on both schools’ web sites to see what they estimate for you.

Go to each school’s web site and put “net price calculator” in the search box to find it.

Great! Thank you so much! Your advice is of incredible help and I really appreciate it!
