I am currently a freshman at Miami (OH) University and am seriously considering a transfer. Miami is VERY campus/small college/fraternity/sorority town oriented and I now understand that I am more suited for different atmosphere. Also, the population is extremely homogenous and I believe that college should entail meeting a variety of people. Finally, the academics are good, but I believe that I can do better (even though some colleges may not agree and that's why I need your help). I am curious as to where I have a chance to transfer into and what colleges you would recommend?

Major (s): History and Philosophy (pre-law)....I previously wanted a minor in philosophy but Miami does not offer it.

High School Stats:

GPA: 4.566 (3rd out of 176)
ACT: 32
SAT: 1340
Extra-Cur: Above Average involvement - Student Council, Mock Trial, Community Service programs, School Plays, National Honor Society, etc.

College Info:

Honors Program at Miami (OH) - around 450 students out of 3,500
At midterm of the first semester: 3.82 GPA
Extra-Cur: Mock Trial, some community service (I'm hoping to get more involved)
Credits: 12 from Post Secondary and AP
16 from First Semester

What colleges would I have a chance to be admitted? Thanks in advance for the help everyone, what a great website.

Sorry, I guess I am being pretty general. I'm just wondering what a guy with my stats could hope for. I am strongly interested in a university with a urban setting, diverse population, numerous opportunities, and of high academic quality. I'm thinking about NYU...do I have a chance to get in here?

It depends on what school in NYU. Assuming from your post that you'd be applying to the regular arts and sciences school, I'd say "Yes, you have a chance." You're high school stats are excellent, so I'd think you'd be in the running. Remember though, schools like NYU (in terms of notoriety) are very competative, and you should do your research about less competative programs if you really want to transfer.

I would apply to CAS at NYU...I am actually very interested in the school and would like an city campus such as this school. I know it is competitive and I would like to go to a school like that. I was just wondering what info you guys could give me on NYU and some other city schools like BU, GWU....among those caliber...what college GPA is usually a must for such schools. Also, what about the Ivys? any chance there?

To tell you guys the absolute truth....I can't stand Miami (OH). The country campus is absolutely a horrible fit for me and I really regret not looking into colleges more earlier. But I can't change the past and I'm thinking about a transfer. I really don't want to get my hopes up though and I wanted to know my chances for the cas at NYU, BU, GWU...or any other suggestions you all may have. Are these schools a reach for me or do I genuinely have a good chance?

I don't think you'll have a problem getting into NYU, BU, or GW. Of course, that is assuming that the rest of your application is passable. It seems to me that you may even have a shot at some of the more transfer friendly Ivy's including Cornell and UPenn.

Thanks alot, I'm definitely going to check out all of those schools. I would be transferring after one year, is that ok? I talked to a counselor at NYU and she said that the majority of students do it at that time so I'm thinking it would be ok, right? I would have 45 credits at the end of the year. Also, do the ivys have any restrictions on what year you can transfer?

You can pretty much transfer to any school given that you have no more than two full years of credit (of course, some schools are more particular with their requirements).
You have great HS statistics so transferring after one year shouldn't be a problem.
