What's the Better Florida School?

UCF
FIT
ERAU
FAMU

I plan on doing Aerospace but Famu is like my match School just so I can go into Florida and then transfer out once I gain the credits,GPA, and Residency into one of the above that have AE or just stay and then go into one of the aboves MS programs in AE.

I just need to know which is better because UCF was ranked low and FIT and ERAU aren't on there so its confusing.

Better as in
School wise do I get what I pay for?
How good are their AE programs?
Resident life

If you want to do Aerospace Engineering, then FIT is most likely the way to go educational-wise. UCF is also a good school, but UCF is more of a commuter school (you don’t really get the “undergrad experience”). If you’re from Florida, then you’re not paying for that much anyway (relative to going to somewhere out of state) because of Bright Futures, so you get more than you pay for in that respect. Also, both FIT and UCF are about an hour away from NASA KSC, so you could definitely get an internship there while you’re in school (I highly recommend this–it gives you priceless work experience and it’s a paid internship). I’m not familiar with ERAU or FAMU, so I can’t really comment on those. Overall, FIT is probably where you want to go if you want to do any type of engineering program. Visit the campus and see for yourself though, because I know some people who went there and then realized that it wasn’t the type of “undergrad experience” that they were looking for. The school is relatively small and the male/female ratio is not as even at FIT, if that bothers you at all. UCF on the other hand is one of the largest schools in the country and definitely the largest in the state (however, most people live off campus), so that’s also something to think about. Just visit all of them and see which one gives you the right feel, because at the end of the day you’re not going to get a bad education anywhere, but you might feel more at home in some schools rather than others. Good luck! I hope this helps! :D

I’m an out of State student.

I’ve always had the impression that Embry-Riddle is the best aerospace engineering school in Florida

The ERAU in Florida was ranked #1 in AE for schools who don’t grant Ph.D’s, but I think FIU has a pretty solid AE program as well.

So its

1.ERAU
2.FIT
3.UCF
4.FAMU

ERAU is best known for aeronautical science…not aerospace engineering. The two are often confused by people on these boards but they really do not have much in common. If you truly want the aero engineering, UCF is the best option on your list.

well I don’t know how to explain it then because Embry-Riddle is #1 on US News’s list of Aerospace Engineering schools that do not have a PhD program

Pierre…what you said is not exactly true. US News lumps aero/astrospace with aeronautical, and that creates a lot of confusion. Those disciplines really should not be placed together. ERAU has one of the best pilot training & astronautical science porgrams in the world. But if your goal is to work for a major contractor designing and engineering high-performance aircraft and space vehicles, the best program in Florida is easily UF followed by UCF…but be forewarned, if aero/astro is your true goal, you are going to need grad school. That is not true of aeronautical.

Hey Midknite,

For Aerospace engineering, FIT and ERAU are definately the places you want to be. But do remember, they’re both private schools and therefore are expensive (especially ERAU). I’m not sure about the integrity of the Aerospace engineering program at UCF, but it’s the best public institution in Florida for engineering from my prospective (location, location, location which leads to internship opportunities, etc; and it’s quickly creating a name for itself in the engineering realm) and is why I’m going there for Computer Engineering/Science.

To the OP…you really need to be careful about some of the “advice” you are getting in this thread.

I don’t know what state you’re coming from, but I would be careful about paying OOS tuition for the programs you have listed. While I guess there is some geographical advantage to the space industry from FL, I would say that in the big picture of things you should use discretion. UF is certainly the best engineering program in FL, UCF is a distant second. You’re going to pay a pretty penny to go to a fairly unknown school, and depending on a number of different factors (some in your control and some that are not) – this may turn out to be a major mistake. If your goal is to go to FL for the sunshine, school & money coming second, I’d go with UCF. If your goal is to make an economic/educational decision, I’d try to stick with you in-state programs.

No School in my state has an AE program just an ME one.
