With a little less than 3.5 GPA and 1200 on SAT.

Not the best, but apply early for the best chance.
If you can get that GPA up, it would help a lot (counts for 2/3).

GPA from which grade counts the most? 3.5 won't go up for 11th grade, however, there's 12th grade plus some classes were honor ones.

No grade counts the most. Your cumulative GPA is what counts. Is your weighted GPA over 3.5?
12th grade probably won't count since you'll need to apply early (August) with that profile.

Unfortunately it's 3.5 GPA. What about School Ranking. Most of the kids from our HS go to PSU. Some to UP where Smeal and some better schools are.

My d got in with 3.9 GPA but lower SATs. I think checking off the "Summer Admit" made a big difference getting into UP & Smeal. She will be starting 6/29 in LEAP. 2 d's at UP at the same time!

What's LEAP? My friend's son was admitted to Smeal. His GPA was 3.7 and he starts this summer.

LEAP: Learning Edge Academic Program, University Park
has all the info. I don't know if there are still any openings but you can just call admissions for up to date info.

My d graduates in 2009. But I think it's time to start looking for colleges.

Definitely jb12, if you can wrap up your visits in junior year, and get applications done by the end of the summer, senior year is a lot less stressful for d & parents both.

My son didn't get in with a 3.97/4.30 with a 31 ACT. He got waitlisted.

?!?!??!!?!?!?

My son applied for the business school had a 3.97unweighted GPA and 4.30 weighted and was waitlisted. So it will show jb12 what the chances might be.

When did your son apply?

My friend's son got accepted into Smeal with 3.75 GPA but he would have to start in summer. I guess now I really don't understand PSU admission process.

I think it depends on when you apply and whether you are willing to do summer. The earlier you apply the better chance you have of getting in.

My son applied 12/21. Tufts Syndrome I think? We're from Cali and doubt they thought he'd come to Penn State. But my wife is from the Pittsburgh area and it would have been a great place to go. Also, I went to a Big 10 school from California. I wanted my son to go out of state. I think it's a great experience to leave your comfort zone. He's now going to Berkeley which is still 500 miles away and the weather and environment is quite different from Southern California. So it'll work. He would have chosen Berkeley anyway as it's a much better business school as well as a school overall. It's just very tough to get into Berkeley. They had over 48000 apps and only accepted 12000. At the welcome night they said the average GPA for admits was 4.36 with an average SAT of 2040. Never was a given so we had to go under the assumption he wouldn't get in.

I don't think it was Tufts syndrome...but I do think the timing of the application hurt him. Smeal is very popular and fills up their spots very quickly. Lots of kids apply in August and September. We have some top kids around here (PA) who applied late and were either waitlisted or deferred to another campus.
Berkeley is awesome though and a great deal since you're in state!

I totally agree. Thanks.

Did anybody receive any acceptance/rejection letters from PSU's Smeal recently?
