What's the difference? Cal Grants, Pell Grants, University Grants, etc?

Okay, so I got this letter in the mail saying I quality for Cal Grant B ($1,551).

And then I checked my Financial Aid website at UCLA and it says I get a certain amount of money for Pell Grant, and University Grant as well. So my question is, does the Cal Grant B also add to this total amount? Or is it already factored into the University Grant?

If the Cal Grant isn't mentioned in your financial aid offer from UCLA, it's not included. But when you inform them about it (they'll find out about it regardless), they will reduce your University Grant by the $1,551, so the net grant amount will be the same.

Seems unfair, but that's the way it goes.

im assuming thats how calgrant will work at every school....
what about outside scholarships? do universities just take those and decrease the grant they give you?

It depends, the BYRD scholarship does not usually reduce other grants. UCLA's alumni scholarship does not reduce other grants. It really depends on the school.
