What are the stupidest myths you've heard before you went to college?!

That being fat, drunk and stupid was no way to go through life...

Kidding.

that its a giant party with hot girls running around everywhere. that once you get "there"

wait its not a big party at your school all the time with scantily clad girls running around uninhibited because of alcohol? damn your school sucks lol

the freshman 15...

i've lost weight since i've gotten to college...at one point i'd lost 3 pounds. oh well...more of an excuse for me to eat bigger meals, walk to Subway at 3 in the morning, and get snacks from the 24 hour coffeeshop with meal plan dining dollars. huzzah to 24 hours of Trojan Grounds :D

That USC has nerdy girls. They don't exist.

To be fair though, phobos, most people do gain weight...

I think the biggest myth is that top publics are all wracked with awful huge lectures where everyone's just a number, miserable, and never learns. No matter how many times I post the figures demonstrating otherwise, that one rears its ugly head.

Next is that your major will determine your future in every way.

Pre-med is a popular major and every college has it

Same with pre-law

The only careers that successful people go into are business, law, and medicine. Specialization is for down the road.

If you don't go to a top 25 school, prepare to be destitute

Long-term relationships during college are impossible

Engineering > econ > everything else

Political science is in fact "poly sci," the study of many sciences or polymers.

Any college in a large city must be dangerous. That's why so many people willingly attend them.

LACs are where people learn. Research universities are just big diploma mills.

...I'm done for now.

engineering is not ridiculous...

oh and everyone pulls allnighters...no one does, and if they do, they're either a technical major or just too stupid to do their work earlier

you can go to bed whenever and get up whenever...um ok, except when you have 8ams...

you want to drink/party every weekend

you don't want to drink/party every weekend?

I sure as hell did.

The myth that college would be the best time of your life

I agree with the guy above me. College isn't the best time of my life. That already happened over the first 18 years of my life.

Anyway, I want to add the myth that exams are hard. College tests are really no harder than the ones you had in high school.

Thats good to now ^^ I was scared about that

"The myth that college would be the best time of your life"

I couldn't agree more.

for some stupid reason, people at my high school kept thinking that college would be a breeze compared to high school....boy were they wrong!!

Also, college isn't one huge party with everyone drinking and partying and managing to get good grades. There are parties, but after a while they get boring too (yea, sounds weird but its true)

I agree with the myth about every class being a huge lecture. I go to a school with somewhere between 10 and 12 thousand undergrads (don't remember the exact enrollment), and have only had one class that I felt was "big". Even that wasn't that big because the professor split us into groups so it felt smaller. The whole class had about 100 people in it. Most of my classes have been under 50. Next semester I'll have my biggest class yet, a class that has roughly 150 students as the capacity. I'm a sophomore. Yes, there are bigger classes on campus but they are not the norm. The majority of my professors thus far have known my name.
The other big one is that "everyone parties". Yeah, a lot of people party, but there are plenty of us that want to have fun without getting smashed. I've found an awesome group of friends, have had a ton of fun, and have never set foot in a party. And it wasn't hard to find these friends either. And this is at a school that's consistently in the top I think 20 party schools

AFPrep- do you seriously think that the BEST part of your life has already come and gone? Seriously? I hope not. It would seriously suck to peak at 18. There really is more to look forward to...

And for myths:

*gpa is super important in landing a job post graduation.
*if you're not in a sorority/frat you will never, ever make friends, you loser.
*comm majors are stupid (though this might be school-specific)
*pre-meds are brilliant by default (this is not school-specific)
*that because your school was hard to get into, everyone must be SO
SMRT.

You're not taking advantage of the opportunities of your college years if they can't top what you had previously done.

The day I graduated was the saddest day of my life. I can't fathom not loving college. Where else do you have as much freedom in such a consequence free environment? (and to point out, I was pre-med not business or something where grades didn't matter nearly as much)

And even if you arent' one to drop everything for a road trip on a random tuesday, or to be at the bars every other night, or do whatever you deem fun all the time, can't you at least appreciate the chance to grow as a person, explore a variety of subjects you likely won't ever have the chance to delve into again, or to find a new passion? If college really sucks for you that much, I believe you need to reevaluate just why you aren't enjoying it.

kids go to college because they WANT to learn

if you're at a top ranked school, everyone will care about school and classes and such

rooming with a friend from home will keep you from venturing out and meeting others

you wont get homesick < LIE!

"If college really sucks for you that much, I believe you need to reevaluate just why you aren't enjoying it."

Its so much more complicated than that.
I find the loneliness to be pretty much un-bearable here. And dont tell me "sign up for clubs" or "go out and talk to people". For someone who has been shy their entire lives, and just held onto a few friends during highschool, College can be hell on earth.

Naw, the happiest years of my life were birth until six. No worries, no cares, mom takes care of EVERYTHING. I didn't even have GPA to worry about :-)

But the most FUN year of my life was senior year of high school. Nothing will ever top that.
