and how fast does Lyman Briggs fill up?
if I apply by early/mid-sep. would that be early enough?

Earliest date to apply would be September 1st, officially. Lyman briggs fills up early supposedly, but you can often switch into it a lot later. I applied as a social studies major in mid-September, found out about the james madison residential college, then changed my major in mid-November. There was no problem at all.

do you think I'll need recommendations if my stats aren't on the low end?
gpa:3.43
ACT:28

and are you sure about the date? because on their website I could start on the app already and someone on this board said they submitted their app in late Aug. and is James Madison a honors school? If so, how hard is it to get into?

Well, from what I can remember September 1st is when they start rolling admissions. So you could submit it as soon as the app. comes up, but they won't start reviewing most likely until September 1st or later.

James madison (similar to lyman briggs) is not an honors school. It is a residential college with special programs for geared towards specific majors. So it is on a first come first served basis, as long as you're accepted you will be able to enroll in either residential college. These residential colleges are very well respected and have considerably more difficult, specialized curriculum than regular majors. There are no teacher's aides teaching and the class sizes are a lot smaller and more individualized, among other benefits. There is an honors college, separate from the two that is a lot harder to get into (typically need to be ranked top 5% and have an ACT of 30+). You can be in both a residential college and the honors college if eligible.

I went on a tour in July of State and the couselor said they are getting a new freshman application. I checked the website but it doesn't say anything about that. I tried to fill out an application for the 09 fall semester but it only had spring and summer. So I'm guessing the new app will be up Sept. 1.

but when I check the printable version it says something like

First semester you wish to enroll: Fall Spring Summer

^^^ That's because the printable version isn't updated, as it is the exact same every year and every semester.

I haven't heard anything about a new freshman application, but I think what newsameold has said is correct. Sept. 1 seems to be the date that the online application first admits fall semester student applications.

does this mean that the essay questions might be different as well? cause I already wrote mine.

New application is now up. I just started mine.

are the essay questions as same as the printable version!!! I need to know!

I wrote mine back in May so my AP Literature teacher could look at it before the end of the school year. I just cut and pasted it from word to the application and suprisingly the prompts related to the essay.

It gave a limit of 400 characters... would there be any problems with it being 100 over?

I wouldn't go over the limit.... Just doesn't seem like a good idea
Petlee:
go to the website and check the topics

You mean 400 words.. but yeah, my essay was 450 words and it was no big deal at all (at least for me). Try to keep it less than 475 words I'd say and they won't be able to tell the difference
