I have taken the SATs 3 times, but I really really (really) think that I can do better, if I take them in december.

I've heard conflicting views about how many times one should take an SAT, but many people I have talked to have seemed to think that 3 should be the limit.

I took it 5 times, starting 7th grade, and my score went up every time. 1170 to 1260 to 1350 to 1370 to 1560. I didn't study in between those either - I just felt I could do better. I'd definitely say if you feel that way to go ahead and take it again. That's just from personal experience.

If you can improve, definitely take it. Some schools penalize you if you take it too many times, but you should check with schools you're interested in.

Penalize?? Why would they penalize you for working hardly and trying to get a better score? First time I've heard someone being penalized from trying to succeed -- sounds kind of retarted to me. But, if they were to penalize you, how would they go about doing it? What would they do?

Um. Well, my advice will run counter to the above posters. All of the admissions officers at top schools "say" that they take your highest combined. But, they do look at the times you've taken it. I mean, it's ok if you started at 8th grade and took it once per year after, but taking it four times in the span of 1.5-2 years...I am sure that's really really pushing it. All of the adcoms would "like" you only to take it twice, third time is pushing it, but fourth time...a fourth time...is well, really pushing it.

if you really think that you can do better than go for it. But if you are trying to go from 1360 to 1380 or some small increase than its probably not worth it.
