What's the overall word on Performing Arts Fairs?

We have one in town next week, and I don't know whether it makes sense to go or not.

S is pretty clear on his choices. Should he go to see if his particular schools have representatives present? Or are those things just mobbed with people all thronging to get near the same people/schools (in which case, we prefer to stay home)? Is there anything specific to be learned, or any specific benefits to be gained, at such an event? If so, we will make our way...with the crowds....

starting at post #23.

We went to the one in Oberlin earlier this week. It was really mobbed most of the time, but by the last half hour, we had the place mostly to ourselves.

If it is in your town, why not go? We found it useful. My son talked to all the colleges he was interested in, eliminated one based on some new information, and added a couple more to look at. Also, I thought it was good for him on another level. The experience of talking to so many admissions people at one time sort of demystifies the people and the process.

The big arts fairs have a list of all schools attending that you can search at

by clicking on the link at the right.

I asked a similar question and that is probably what BassDad linked you to.

Doesnt sound like many people got much out of the fairs. I hope the representatives know more than the ones that attend the regular fairs that we have attended.

I looked up the list of schools attending the one near us, and it is an amazing group to be assembled all in one spot. Basically, every school that DS would consider will be there. I still don't know that such an evening would be worthwhile, however, based on other posters' opinions and my son's less than enthusiastic response.

I wonder if it is better for people who are just starting their research? We have done quite a lot of legwork already.

I do recall that other thread now...thanks, FM and BD.
