Collegeboard says that students in UVA
85% of them had 3.75 gpa or higher
is this true??
dannggg i must have no chance of getting in with
a 3.68 which is only 9%(3.5~3.75)
I know they look at more than just the GPA
but still if my gpa is not one of the 85%...
i guess my chances are very low
-_-

Hey, I'm a chinese guy, and I would like to aply to an American school for my master's degree, I'm in my third in a chinese college now and my major is Science of Atmosphere.
I would take the GRE test this June, and would you give me some awesome recommendations which school could I aply to. Moreover, is there any forum where there are people who would like to check my AW works?

Thanks a lot~

We don't calculate an average GPA because there are so many dissimilar scales in use. I don't know how that stat is compiled, but I wouldn't read into it.

College Board is routinely behind on data. For years after they did away with the SAT II writing, they had us listed as requiring that test. Go figure.

noneinspiration - check out the graduate forums

Not sure how college board arrived at their average, but they do provide a scale that they apparently used for it.

How to Convert Your GPA to a 4.0 Scale

Not sure which type of classes are weighted in their scale... but it may put you in the majority according to their statistics. However, like Dean J said... you probably shouldn't read much into it.

Just recently, I was at a presentation on the incoming class of '12 and the average GPA of incoming freshman is a 4.07. And I've heard that number for a number of presentations. Dean J, do you know if that number is accurate? First Year Seminar definitely had that in their presentation.

Our admins enter GPAs into the student system, but they are on all sorts of scales. I cringe at the thought of anyone averaging all those GPAs and putting the result out there as the average. They'd be averaging unweighted GPAs on a 4.0 scale with heavily weighted GPAs on all sorts of other scales. It's a case of "dirty" data producing an unreliable statistic.

What about electives? Do colleges, including UVA, consider electives when calculating the gpa?

I would imagine the 3.75 was the unweighted average, which seems a bit low for UVa.

Hey don't worry about the GPAs. Every school has differing standards and the admissions commitee will probably judge you based on the rigors of your curriculum.
