Son, a graduating HS senior, will work as a Boy Scout camp counselor in the Sierras.
Daughter, a rising senior in college, will be working in Germany helping to install a new particle detector; travel, lodging, food all paid for by a large research grant, plus a salary. I’m amazed and grateful. She doesn’t speak a word of German, so I hope it works out.
:-)

D1: will intern at a hospital in the university of Pittsburgh when she finishes her spring term
S: Interning at Intel in Hillsboro OR from mid May to mid Aug.
D2: will work at an ice cream place, intern at our local vet, volunteer at our animal shelter, and attend the 2 week Vet Camp at Tufts in July.

Yes, please, amtc, can you adopt me too?

Son will be interning full time at the headquarters of a major political party (unpaid and no credit, but he’s excited about it).

My rising Junior will be going to Philmont( Boy Scout 65 mile backpacking trip) for 2 weeks, one week backpacking and one week working on trails, getting his Rescue Scuba Cert., working as a staff member at the Boy Scout Jamboree in VA, working the weekends up in the mountains on their Search and Rescue team, and finishing his Eagle Scout project. He would also like to fit in getting his Wilderness First Responder if possible. He’s crazy!!!

my D trying to get an intership but so far no luck. So she’s been wolring around the house. I guess she needs plan B.

My D (rising college sophomore) got an unpaid internship for 2 days a week at a local TV station. She’s getting great experience, but it would be nice to have some $ coming in. She will be taking a class at a local university during July - early August. Might do some babysitting, is doing some volunteer work. She is also taking dance classes (ballet dancer).

My D’s school emphasizes internships for the summer - many of her classmates are paying to do an internship, so I guess I should be thankful she found one here so she doesn’t have to pay for housing, etc.

My S (rising HS junior) is performing in two shows at our local community theatre. Since he is now 16 I was hoping he might get a paid job, but I don’t think this is the summer to do that. Many of their friends have not been able to find jobs this summer and are doing nothing.

This sounds like my DS. He has been trying since March to find work. I think the problem is that we live in one state and he goes to school in another. When he fills out the apps he writes down his OOS (the apps ask for last school attended), so I think the employers figure out pretty quickly that he is only looking for temporary work.

At least my yard gets mowed and raked!

My d, a rising senior, will be spending her second summer as office staff at the sleepaway camp she attended for eight years as a camper. Next year she had agreed to stay at home for the summer so we will have time for a family vacation before she heads off to college!

Nothing is possible in our city, volunteering positions are having waiting lists in hundreds. I am glad, that D. decided to buy new musical instrument and learn it on her own just to have something to do. Doing very well with it. Still trying to find any volunteering / shadowing. The only kids who have anything, have either connections or positions created for them by parents in power to do so. Everybody is saying how Detroit is bad, we are much much worse. Lots of people are driving to work in Detroit from our city on a daily basis. No jobs, no internships, no volunteering, nothing even for those with extensive experiences, perfect GPAs, wide variety of skills and awesome recommendations.

Both of mine are rising hs seniors.
D will be working at a museum in our city that links up to her interest area. She had been volunteering there, and now has a paying job that she’s quite excited about. She’ll also be doing an academic summer camp at a local university towards the end of the summer.

S was unsuccessful in landing a paying job despite much attempt, so he will be volunteering at a children’s museum, a local political party (Republican, where did I go wrong, LOL) and talked a local specialized newspaper in letting him be a weekly columnist. Since he doesn’t have the work obligations that D does, he’s also going to be spending a few days with one grandfather (my father) on the east coast and a few days with my husband and other grandfather at a cabin fishing and doing guy-stuff, which given that these are three suburban Jewish guys, will mean going out on the lake, catching nothing beyond seaweed, then going out for dinner and getting ice cream. But still manly!

Hodge-podge of things among two of them. They have the advantage of living outside the US (in our region the economy is still doing great).

S1 rising sophomore: working in micro-bi lab on campus, volunteer at kids science camp

D1 rising junior: working as instructor at kids riding camp near our house, volunteering at camp in europe, driving lessons

Both going on family trip to Newfoundland where we’ll meet up with family friends from Europe, and also spend a few weeks at our cabin in the gulf island, when family friends from the middle east will be staying with us.

Well, if this first week back is any indicator… it looks like what my son will be doing is… sleeping. I know he’s still decompressing, but when I came home after work last night, he was still in bed and hadn’t moved since the night before!

This will be by far the busiest summer my kids have had.

D (rising sophore) is on a mission trip in Mexico right now and leaves later to study language abroad for a month.

S is on same said mission trip, 3 days later leaves for college tour then spending most of the summer at a theater program at a university. He comes back in August and next day starts rehearsals for a show. Seems happy, and we anticipated this being a tough summer so last summer was really laid back/famiy together.

Youngest D is a rising college senior–she’ll be spending the next 9 weeks (she leaves on Monday for staff week) at the New Hampshire camp where she started as a camper when she was 9 and where she was also a CIT and counselor. She’s now a program director and is looking forward to sharing a cabin with another program director–still has to walk down to the showers and bathroom! My oldest D and husband (both will be starting grad school at the end of July) are leaving for 3 weeks in Peru for an Awesome Surfing Adventure–going to an area north of Lima with great waves.

Make sure you tell her to avoid any rogue Van Der Sloot boys.

LOL - I was thinking of Lima, Ohio & wondering where those waves would be!! :)

Heading to New Mexico desert to look for Buffalo Soldier artifacts.

I’m excited for her, but glad I’m not the one headed to the desert in the summer!

oh well since intership or paid work doesn’t seem like an option this summer, DD is thinking to do some immersion language program to improve her French…i wonder if it is too late to find something? dd has finished her freshman year in college and didn’t take any French classes but she took 4 years of French in HS…any ideas how to find an Frech immersion program for this summer ?

I’d phone Concordia Language Villages to see if the have any openings.

Edit: Sorry, I hadn’t noticed she had finished some college. She’ll be too old.

D, rising college senior, has not yet been able to land an internship, paid or otherwise. In the middle of finals this week she applied to one last posting and landed an interview today. She is mostly qualified and at least they wanted to talk to her. Her backup plan (which was the primary plan prior to 2 days ago!) is to do the summer intensive in Hebrew at her college. It’s a year’s worth of language in 6 weeks and she’ll be able to practice on her Birthright trip in August. She will also do research and field work for her thesis and write post-grad fellowship applications. It’s a tough world out there right now as far as jobs, paid or otherwise, are concerned…she’s been looking actively since January.
