D, rising senior is doing a paid internship with Senator Jim Webb in DC.

twomules, thanks for trying…that’s one little detail we encountered. There are a lot of french immersion for HS, but we haven’t found many for college students…

S1, a rising junior, is doing research this summer, funded by Sesame Street/Electric Co. He’s creating a literacy-learning game for a remarkable upcoming game system aimed at lower-income siblings (elementary age students). And here I had previously thought “research” only entailed finding the cure for cancer–LOL! This offer came to him through his university, which posts many job and paid internship opps, a benefit we had not realized would be so crucial in this economy. He feels very fortunate to be doing work in his field, and grateful to be earning $$ since he will do study abroad next spring.

S2, a rising HS senior, will be “finding” himself this summer. He’s exploring possible majors by taking a university-sponsored course (will live on campus for 2 weeks), and also working in his school’s bookstore for $. His junior year was kinda brutal and he hasn’t watched TV in 9 months. Heh. So there will be some DVR catching up. Can one put that on one’s college app?

Concordia does have language immersion weeks for adults. Just FYI.

My son, a rising high school junior, will be going to Governor’s School for 6 weeks. We’re excited, but I’m sad at the same time, too. I will miss him like crazy, and when he returns home, it will only be to prepare for NCSSM for the next 2 years.

I’m a rising college senior. I am taking a Kaplan GRE course and preparing my essays/SOP and applications for graduate programs. I interviewed at six companies for summer positions and was declined at all of them. At some point in the summer, I am doing research with Microsoft and my university. At the end of the summer, it’s back to NYU for Welcome Week training.

Well went and picked up D2 from her first yr at college ( and a local friend who attends a school in Minn and was out for the year), yesterday.
Actually, today D isn’t even home, since she wanted to go to her friends house ( there are several others in her group in that neighborhood)
lol
But she will be home this summer- past summers she has been a residential camp counselor, so we didn’t see her for more than a few hours at a time- this yr I am hoping I will get to see her a bit more.

Last summer our student split the time with sports develop camp/nationals and volunteer work. This summer our student is away with sport/competition for most of the time…gets back for a little family vacation and school is in a week later.
Don’t know when summer reading and the begining of apps/essays will get done.

D’s been home since May 1…taking 3 online classes this summer, working about 30 hours a week selling jewelry for Walmart, doing an unpaid internship with a non-profit…she’s a busy girl! S, a rising senior, is looking forward to his last day of school tomorrow, has a 1.5 day/week restaurant job, a 1 day/week seasonal concession job, an as-needed job helping on a farm, and is going for his second interview at Walmart later today. It’s a challenge coordinating everyone’s schedule, especially at night or when it rains, as the two of them have to share a car when S can’t take the moped. Lately, I’ve been the one stuck home without transportation and that’s getting old…ah well, at least everyone’s gainfully employed and has plenty of stories to trade when we do see each other.

College Soph Son - camp counselor

Busy HS Senior D - volunteering at day camp, YMCA leadership camp (3 wks), volleyball pre-season training, summer reading assignment, and hopefully starting college app. essays.

Rising college senior. Had contract as software developer for company in MD that would allow him to be home in CT for his last summer and still make a decent amount of $$$. But another opportunity arose…

Leaving TOMORROW for San Francisco for an 8 week internship/contract job as a developer for a bigger, more up-and-coming company (the opportunity just fell in his lap). No housing, no friends in SanFran, never been there…looking at the next 8 weeks as a big adventure and a resume builder. God bless the adaptability (and optimism) of youth!

My college son started doing carpentry but he loves it so much at times I fear his going to make that full time and make college part time. I said he can do carpentry full time this summer.
