when applying college, do you count as from your hometown region, or from your boarding school regio

My kid is applying to some of the boarding schools in New England. We live in Georgia. If he is lucky enough to get accepted, when it is time to apply for college, will he be counted as from Georgia, or will he be counted as from new england region? I heard region makes a big difference for top college admission…

Thanks!

For geographic diversity purposes (which is less important than you might think for top schools), he will be considered a GA resident. However, his application will be read by the AO responsible for the BS, and evaluated against his classmates, if nay apply to the same colleges.

thank you! We will tell him it is not that bad if he can not get in top boarding school. He can still get in top college if he works hard and he might have an advantage comparing to local kids instead of top BS kids… be ready either way, haha!

Each school treats this differently. For example Harvard breaks down their reading into geographic dockets. About 10 of the big NE boarding schools have their own docket. Two schools (Exeter and Andover) comprise a single docket. Some dockets are filled with multiple states (MD, VA, DE, DC). This can be both good and bad. The competition within the boarding school dockets are intense, but overall your kid would be competing against fewer students for a spot.

Another big thing you should keep in mind that if your kid is a potential national merit scholar, then he will be counted in the boarding school pool, which requires a very high school to qualify. Being an in-state student from GA, the threshold would a little lower.
