We’re planning out this coming summer, and figure by the end of August we should have most applications in, including preferred audition dates.
But checking college web sites now, all are still listing 2015-2016 audition dates.
Does anyone know when the audition dates for 2016-2017 will be posted?
I’ve read elsewhere here on CC that Chicago unifieds are February 6-10 2017, but I’m mostly curious about on-campus auditions.
So can my D apply at schools starting in August? When is common app available? I thought we should start in sept? Cause are the school counselor a even available to send transcripts & stuff in aug when they’re caught up in the back to school rush?
Common app generally goes “live” August 1st. My D’s year some schools updated websites during the summer (lots are letting out right now) I found that by August they were up
@brcarl - There is no “deadline” for when all the programs have posted their dates. They will all trickle in on their own timelines. In the past, a few - like IU - have posted dates very early, in May or June. While others - like WSU - may not post until September. It can vary year-to-year and school-to-school. When we went through this three years ago, I made up a chart of the previous year’s dates to get a general feel for who had fall dates, late spring dates, Friday vs. Saturday/Sunday dates, etc. MOST schools tend to keep the same weekends from year-to-year.
@theaterwork you can do your part of the common app. It greatly helps to have your portion completed. The schools can complete their part when they return. As I’m sure you’ve heard here repeatedly, ask them to write LOR’s this summer and inform them of your timeline for early fall.
@theaterwork - contact your school counselor now to see when he/she will be available over the summer. Let them know that your D’s timeline will not be like “regular” seniors’ applications. In our school district the counselors are in-office through June and come back the end of July/first of August. You are correct that they are often busy with school start-up stuff in August, but if you contact them now, they can let you know when is a good time to reach them for early submission of transcripts. We made a point of dropping off ASEs (if any schools still even use those) in summer. I don’t know if any schools are still doing this, but my S’s year some - like PPU - had rolling applications and you could submit any time over the summer.
My D went ahead and opened her Common App account last night. She added a few schools to her queue. She is going to be gone pretty much the entire Summer, and now that she will be away next school year, our stretch goal is to have everything submitted by 9/1 (10/1 is probably more realistic.)
I remember my D signed up for some schools’ mailing lists and received notification as soon as the application was live online. That could help.
@owensfolks I thought that the common app opens on 8/1 for that year’s incoming seniors. Does it carry over if you started this year’s now?
@owensfolks - Be aware that you may lose all your info if you started the Common App now. We found out the hard way last year (though luckily hadn’t filled out too much). We filled it out early and then our account/app disappeared when the new one rolled out and all the essay questions changed- so we had to start again from the beginning. Best to wait till the one opens in Aug. for the incoming seniors.
I think its ok to go ahead and answer this year’s common app essay questions as a start to your essays for next year. Do them in a word document that can be copied and pasted into the common app, or any app, when you begin filling our your actual applications. More than likely, if the question changes, you will still be able to use a good portion of what you have written with minor adjustments. Many college essay questions are similar and you will become an expert at editing your responses to fit the questions for each school. You need to make sure you answer the question posed on each application. But more often than not, it is not necessary to start completely from scratch.
Thanks @stagedoormama would have hated to redo it.
Yes, thanks @stagedoormama ! She just did the basics to secure a login and password and added colleges to her queue. I will report back after 8/1, as to whether it streamlined things, or if she had to re-enter everything. I read somewhere (not in CC) that the essay prompts are staying the same this year.
When can you start applying to schools in general? August? Like the ones that don’t use Common App. … I would think rolling admissions schools is definitely August or even sooner? Would love to knock out this stuff as early as possible…
For many of the schools, once the Common App and any school - specific essays are done (and the school is accepting applications), you can start to apply. I Juster checked BWs site and August 1 is the date! There are a few – prescreen schools - where your entire package needs to be done (including prescreens) in order to apply (U Mich and Ithaca a few years back but procedure could have changed). There are some prescreen schools where you may be able to piecemeal the application but won’t get an audition slot until the prescreen is submitted. Great idea to get things done as early as practicable!
If possible, get prescreen videos done before school starts, or soon thereafter - especially if there are specific dance prescreens. Scheduling recording time in a dance studio can be tricky and unforeseen circumstances can push back recording sessions later than ideal. If you can get the videos done before the fall rehearsal/performance/audition season heats up, you will be glad you did.
@mom4bwayboy is totally right on! If you have everything chosen and your prescreens shot, edited and ready to go, you’ll be so ahead of the game. Plus some schools have different prescreens than others. For example, just an intro, or saying why you want to go to the school, etc. You may have to do those later and if your main prescreens are in the can you’ll be so happy!
FYI. New website launched www.collegeauditions.org. Post here if it is any good
