I realise that they say late summer, but they're practically the last college/university for crying out loud. What's taking so long, and why can't they at least put updates on the admissions site for it? I don't mean to sound caustic or anything, but I'm just genuinely concerned about how late they're planning to release it. I'd really like to get a start before the fall term begins, which is less than two weeks away!

If anyone has any information on this glances desperately at MIT alumni/students I'd very much appreciate it if you could post it here. Thank you!

There’s another thread about this… They say late August on the admissions site (so they aren’t late yet), and in addition, Matt said it might be a little later than usual this year. He also mentioned that they might be changing the questions this year (although this isn’t for sure), which may account for the delay.

Haha, I was kinda the other extreme… worrying about essays over Christmas break also kinda sucks. But yeah, Piper is right guys, don’t stress out over this.

Oh, don’t get me wrong - I was really frantic about actually getting in to places. But I was pretty chill about the application process itself. You organize. You fill out the basic forms for schools, make sure SATs/transcripts/recs get sent, and write the essays. The essays take the most time, but it doesn’t take a month to write this sort of essay :). I started with 4 applications and ended up doing 11 (16 schools total) because when I finished the first 4, I realized it wasn’t a big deal to do another (and then another, and another :D).

Really, I think the application process is stressful because older generations keep telling the younger ones to be stressed out about it. I sort of missed the whole, “You should be flipping out over your essay not being Nobel Prize worthy” lesson. W00t for obliviousness!

Yeah, the essays should not take nearly as much time as people tell you to allot for them. If you have a life experience that you’d like to share, there is usually a way of twisting it around to fit any prompt. Then write original-sounding stuff about it and you’re fine. :-)

Exception: if you’re applying to UChicago, get started on their essay now.

Well, I mean, I wanna get a start before school gets hectic again with IB and stuffs. It’s not that big of a deal, I suppose, but it really starts to build up with the extended essay, scholarship apps, and whatnot.

That situation isn’t going to be a unique one, as most MIT applicants who get accepted have taken the most challenging courses their schools offer. Again, though, it’s nothing to panic over :)
