Hi,

My son will be applying to college in a couple of years. By then, he will have a number of credits earned at local colleges. He may also have taken some AP exams and/or CLEP exams.

I'm wondering at what point the colleges will make the decision about which credits they will accept/award. I know the AP credits can't be determined until the summer, after the exam results are known, but would it be possible to find out the rest soon after he is offered admission? It could make a real difference in his decision--if College A will only accept 3 transfer credits, while College B will take 12, that's the same as if College B were giving him a lot more financial aid.

Thanks, and please let me know if I've put this in the wrong forum. I looked at the transfer forum, but since he won't have attended anywhere else full time, I wasn't sure if it belonged there.

Search each website for “credit by exam” as well as CLEP and AP. That should get you to the page where the policy is stated. The credits won’t be posted on the student’s transcript until the student actually enrolls and has the appropriate paperwork sent to the college/university.

Hmm, that’s what I feared. I’ve checked the policies of some of the schools he’s interested in, and the test credit is pretty straightforward, but the transfer credits less so. There are three local colleges where he may take classes. I guess I’ll just have to put the question to the individual schools as he narrows his list.

Thanks!

Community college to same state public university transfer credit is usually covered by a pre-existing articulation agreement. Some private universities that take a lot of transfers also have articulation listings. Some universities have articulation for other than same state community colleges.
