When do colleges actually make decisions?

lol, this is kind of a stupid question. When do you think colleges start/end making decisions considering the jan 1/mid march timeline. I would imagine that colleges have finalized decisions some time before decisions are sent out, but I wonder when this would be. Any thoughts?

I think they make decisions as soon as they begin receiving applications. But the process can continue right up to the wire. I am guessing, but I suspect that the very final decisions might be made as late as a few days before decisions are released.

Some kids will be firmly in the accepted pile from the start. But MANY others, especially at the super selective colleges, will be taken out of the accepted pile because they don’t have room for all of them.

If you are asking because you think you might have something to add to your application (maybe you are going to be considered for an award in February, for instance), just try to get the information to an admissions officer as soon as possible. If you know you are being considered as a final candidate for something, or you land a great summer position that’s relevant to your goals, I’d email the regional rep and ask them to add the information to your file ASAP. If it’s something substantial, it can’t hurt. And maybe it will help your app. But do consider how important the additional info is.

Do you think AOs are reading RD apps now even if they have ED2 deadlines?

I have seen a likely letter as soon as 2 weeks after the RD deadline. I am sure that there are always some easy first read declines.

Yes, the school that I saw a likely letter 2 weeks after the RD deadline has ED2. The application also wasn’t submitted until the deadline.

Hm. Interesting but just one anecdote. I’m wondering if there’s some common way that the majority of AOs read and if they do so in order of decision date. I know of very few schools that even send likely letters.
