The question speaks for itself.

are likely letters only for athletes?

i believe that they are only for athletes however if everyone does get them they come out around november 15th

^nope, anyone

and i dont think they do likely letters for ED, only RD…there really is no benefit for them to send out likely letters if youre applying ED because u already committed to them if they accept you. likely letters for RD seeks to get first dibs on a kid they know is applying to a lot of other prestigious schools as well by letting them know first. research shows likely letters improve yield for some of these schools

ED
Athletic: October - November
Non-Athletic: N/A

RD
Athletic: N/A
Non-Athletic: So few are sent out its difficult to say, but well before actual acceptances are sent out.

really, I thought the best applicants got them, regardless of ED or RD.

A lot of athletic likelies have already been sent out, though there are still some to come. The postal service is pretty slow for some reason, and mine at least arrived via email a couple weeks before I got it in the mail. I’m not sure if they do the same thing with the RD ones. Those are the only type of ED likely letters they use (that I know of).

RD ones are usually a few weeks to a month before the regular decisions come out, so probably towards the beginning of March. There are the non-athlete ones. I forget, they might send them out in mini-batches.

I’ll assume that you are one of the lucky recipients. What sport do you play?
