I took AP credit for mechanics (physics) and was just told by a bunch of medical schools that I need to take a higher-level physics course to fulfill the requirement, so I guess I will be taking modern physics. My question is: since modern physics has absolutely nothing to do with the MCAT, can I take it senior year? Or will medical schools reject me if I don't take it before the end of junior year?
Thanks!

Med schools adcomms like to see key pre-reqs ( key pre-reqs are generally considered to be physics and OChem) completed by interview time; however you only actually are required to have them completed before matriculation. (Your acceptance will conditional until you show you have satisfactorily completed the pre-req.)

With E&M already on your transcript and assuming you have a good score on the PS subsection of the MCAT, it probably won’t prevent you from getting interviews.

EDIT: did you complete E&M or drop it?

If you only have AP physics credit on your transcript with no additional college physics classes, it will probably have a strong negative effect on how your application is percieved. Med schools want to see grades for Ochem and physics when reviewing applications.

Are you sure they said to take an upper level physics class? Most Medical schools will allow AP credit for Physics to satisfy the requirement. They are only a little stingy on Bio and Chem. For Physics they are really just looking for Mechanics and E&M. The only med school I know to date that will not take AP credit even for Physics is Yale. I would double check.

also did you tell them it was on your transcript or just that you “have AP credit.” They are two very different things. Did you tell them you were taking E&M?

Thanks for all the replies!
I did not drop E&M, I completed the class (got an A, somehow).
I did say in my email that the mechanics AP credit appears on my transcript.
Most of the schools said something like this:
“AP credit is acceptable. Science AP courses for which an applicant has received course credit at his or her undergraduate degree-granting institution will be considered as fulfilling the pre-med science course requirements. Applicants should keep in mind, however, that the Committee will expect to see advanced level undergraduate courses in the science disciplines for which the AP credit was awarded.”
That’s what Northwestern said. It seems like they are basically telling me that I will still be considered to have fulfilled the requirements, but I will still likely be rejected.

I would think the e&m class is enough

I do too. The response Northwestern gave Torchwood is taken verbatim from their web site, which says:
That e-mail reply might as well have been automated :D
