When Do Special Status Applicants Receive an Admission Decision?

I received the special status invitation in May and sent in my application to Pitt at the end of June. They received all of my materials at the beginning of July so my application has been complete. I was wondering if anyone knew when special status applicants receive an admission decision. I've asked this before but I keep getting many different answers. Originally, we were told 3 weeks after all application materials have been submitted. Then I have also heard (from credible sources) that we will hear in early August and late August or possibly early September.

Does anyone know the answer to this question for sure? I would just like to know when to anticipate a decision as this is my first choice school. Thanks!

I called Pitt and asked. I was told that the applications will begin to be reviewed in late August and that they will be reviewed in the order that they were received. Decisions will be sent out shortly after, but I don’t recall them telling me an exact date.

Okay thank you.

check last years threads to see when people started hearing, i can’t remember for sure but I want to say last August? mine applied in Sept and heard about 2 weeks later, maybe a week and a half after he applied so based on above note from 2 girls, pitt would have notified the folks who applied during the summer before him. i am pretty sure his acceptance letter was dated Sept 17th. also, he sent in some supplemental materials after he was accepted(he was trying for scholarships) and Pitt was fine with him doing that and Pitt was very organized in keeping all his materials together. i did stay in touch with Pitt last fall to make them aware new info was coming in and they assured me that was acceptable but they needed everything in their hands by the scholarship deadline, which i think was Jan 15 last year.

They said the turn around time was 2-3 weeks after all materials were received. I applied in June and was told that the admissions committee didn’t meet until August so I guess I won’t be getting a decision in the 2-3 weeks. Did your son get the special status and end up getting in?

Yeah, i think the 2 to 3 week turnaround refers to people applying in the fall or later. Not sure why this is not specified when Pitt encourages you to apply over the summer. Yes, my son was accepted! I’ll see if I can find the links to when people started hearing last year. I’m pretty sure he was special status. My very unofficial impression is that if they send you the special status option, your odds to get in are between good to great, assuming your GPA is what they would expect with your SAT/ACT, and there are no red flags on your app(and by that I mean a criminal history, a horrible teacher rec, etc. I’'m talking about BIG red flags, not some minor issue). Hang in there. i was more antsy than he was waiting to hear from schools, even where his admissions chances were good. it seemed like forever at that time but looking back, it went fast. also, and I beat around the bush on my last post. Since his acceptance letter was dated around Sept 17th and he applied a lot later than you did, you should here before mid September and my best guess from memory is late August.

I think this link may also show stats for a lot of kids. Take care, ctl

Thanks so much! Your insight and that link are very helpful. I agree, it’s driving me crazy waiting to hear the admissions decisions, especially from Pitt because I want to go there more than anything. I’m hoping the special status and my application being in by July will help somehow. My weighted GPA is a 4.0 and my unweighted is a 3.875. By the end of high school, I will have 5 AP and 4 CHS courses in total (most of these being in my senior year). I wrote the essays and have one great letter of rec. My only problem is my ACT composite score of 25. (Eng. 27 and Math 25), which is my best standardized test score after taking one SAT and one ACT. I’m not sure how much that will affect my chances.

My son sent everything in by the beginning of July, last year and he received his acceptance letter on August 15th. Good luck!

How did you manage to get the transcript sent during the summer?

our school administration was willing to send my son’s transcript in over summer if either of us requested it. So’d i call the adminsitration office and see what policy is for your district. for us, we were given a contact name, and she was happy to help out.; she is one of the high school sectretaries but took over transcript duties over summer since she worked part time over summer and guidance counselor was off during summer.

Thank you. I will see if guidance is in during the summer otherwise we will wait until September. Did you send in the transcript electronically? What did you do about letters of rec? My daughter is sending in an activity sheet with the select status app. We have the name and email address of her schools admissions counselor.

i don;t know how transcripts were sent, may have been snail mail. we sent in lor’s later. pitt will make decision i think so long as they have test scores and transcript. the lor’s are optional but we sent one in September; teacher sent it directly and i sent the other lor in November. kid had been admitted by the time the second lor arrived at pitt but they did add it to his scholarship application.

Thanks@ct1987. It’s helpful to know that Pitt added the supplemental materials to the application for scholarship consideration even though it was already complete for admissions.

Yes I agree with STEM. D will be emailing he request for them to wait for the LOR before evaluating her.

I wonder why Pitt told you that applications weren’t being reviewed until late August. It seems like many people get notified of an admission decision before then.

Good question. I guess when you call admissions the response depends on who you talk to. I would assume that notifications start to go out some time in August.

Kerri from Pitt Admissions, here. We have to wait for final approval from the Deans of all our schools on the Admissions Guidelines before we begin to review. This usually happens in early August. We plan to start reviewing completed applications this week, so hopefully decisions will begin going out within the next two weeks or so.

We were wondering when we were going to hear something re a select app. So, am I to understand that my D received her (repeated multiple times) emails from Marc L Harding, Chief Enrollment Officer, University of Pittsburgh, dated 3 June 3014, that repeatedly stated “An admission decision in just three weeks, once all completion materials are submitted”…and D rushed to get everything completed and in (including a rush transcript from her GC as a favor from him) only to find out from hailtopitt1787 (Kerri from Pitt Admissions above) that they don’t even start looking at apps until Aug.? Huh? That was not stated in fine print in the emails or the app link and D talked to admissions office making sure the items she submitted were all they needed and they never gave an indication that the 3 week decision time would actually start at the beginning of Aug. Boy, we feel like fools pressing the GC for a transcript. Even funnier is Grandma who is an active Pitt alum who is threatening to make some calls. “My alma mater wouldn’t lie”…oh Grandma hahahaha

@pineview I agree the language is very confusing. The 3 week turnaround does refer to when we start to review. That should have been clarified from the beginning. If you send me a direct message with your student’s name, I’d be happy to check to see where she is in the review process and give a specific timeframe.
