Anyone know when/how we are notified?

finalists next week, scholars april-may

do they mail the info to the school or to houses?

According to the website, schools are sent notification on Feb 1 and individuals are mailed notification on Feb 8. Hope its good news for everyone.

Unless you didn't file the application, did real bad in the SAT, or had major disciplinary problems you'll make it to finalist (15/16).

You can also fail to make finalist if your GPA is not high enough. This happened to my daughters friend last year. But she was notified well before the finalist notifications are due so if you have not heard that you did not make i you probably did.

Do you know what your daughter's friend's gpa was?

That's true. No news is good news. They notified the ones that didn't make it at the end of January (with time to appeal I guess).

So the Scholars are different than the Finalists?

That's right. Remember that their scholarship is only $2500 once (scholars). The real money is in the institutional scholarships. UF used to give $22,000 over 4 years to NMSF. Now is down to around $1000 (every year). Other schools give a lot more (U of Oklahoma gives full ride to NMSFs). The way I figure is that $2500 is a whole summer's worth of work at $6/hour (10 weeks), so it's always a good deal if you get it.

schoolmom - no I don't. More than a 4th of the class in this HS were semi finalists and an eighth of them did not make finalist. It is a very difficult math and science school where the kids have to have straight As in their highschool plus high ACT/SATs to get in. The grading is brutal and many originally straight A students get Bs, Cs and even fail classes. My daughter was one of them. She is in university now and acing classes she struggled to pass in that school. Her friend that missed out on making finalist was crushed as she would have been a finalist if she had stayed in her original school and she needed the money.

So just to be certain, if I didn't get any notification otherwise, that means that I'm a finalist? Did everybody who didn't make finalist get notification, or just some people? And is it possible that the notification about not making finalist just hasn't arrived in the mail yet (I live in Michigan)?

The thing I'm especially worried about is my SAT score...PSAT was 233, but SAT was only 2140. My counselor said that that wasn't too large of a difference, but I'm still a bit worried. My dad said that that probably would have been too much of a difference back when he was in high school, but that was at the end of the 60s, so things could definitely have changed since then.

I think so long as your SAT is over 2000ish you are OK. There was a post about it last year.

Thanks. Now I just have to wait to talk to my guidance counselor on Monday to find out the results for sure (I don't mean to be cocky or egotistical, but it seems like the sort of situation where as long as I don't have any major deficiencies, I'll become a finalist, and I don't have any major deficiencies).

After talking with the GC last week, she said that she had already been notified of the SF who did not make finalist. She said they send certificates for NMF by mail, so they will probably get them next week.

Which PSAT test is this for? Is this the one that was taken like in October or something 2007? Or is this the 2006 one? D:

For those who took the PSAT as juniors in 2006.

I've posted on a couple of other threads, but just so everyone knows it's time to start asking your principal or GC about NMF. D's school told her today she made it. The other three NMSF at her school also made NMF, lending credence to those posters who said that if you were NOT going to get it, you would have been notified earlier. Good luck all!

Congratulations, wvartsymom! I've been watching the calendar and posts on this forum as well, and I thought someone would post that they knew today. I gave S's principal the "heads up" this morning, and he responded that he will let me know as soon asap when he gets word.

DS's Principal just called to tell him he had advanced to finalist!
