My older daughter and I visited USC about two years ago. We loved the place, but my daughter’s did not get in-state tuition or a scholarship, so she enrolled in a state school here. Needless to say, I’m thrilled that my younger D may actually go there!

We’re in Illinois and have never visited USC, though we have lived in the South and hubby and I went to school in Va. so the cultural thing is absolutely not an issue. Would have liked to visit before now seems like it is getting so late, but quite frankly have not considered any college where DS did not get into Honors, so were waiting on the decision. JMU Honors = no real merit for OOS, so regretfully moved off of the final list. Colo. School of Mines looked great and he got great $, until we realized the male/female ratio.

It’s between this and Alabama Honors… any input? Computer Science Major and Media Arts (Digital Media) either Dbl. major or minor… UA Honors enrolls about 1,000, USC about 300 I think?

Honors is a community with its own activities like Capstone. It used to split its housing between Maxcy and Capstone but last fall the new Honors Complex opened so now all first year and 2nd year who want to stay can be housed there (2nd yr and above Honors students are offered apartment housing options on the Historic Horseshoe)The new dorm has a cafeteria, Starbucks open late, classrooms, etc. Its probably alittle more thanthe 300 number…maybe 400. Honors students have their own sections of some required classes and a range of their own course offerings.S has taken some interesting stuff over the 4 years. The Honors students have the option of writing/creating a Senior Honors Thesis ,which they defend in front of a committee.S is in this process now.

^My son has been accepted into Honors and we are hoping he’ll go there (we’re in state). He seems really interested. We have met Dean Baird and other deans from the school and have been very impressed.

We will be going down in April for the ‘Meet the Dean’ session and Scholars Day. My question is do the Honors students tend to bond as a group? Do they have lots of group activities? My son is somewhat of an introvert and has been in a small private school setting for 12 years. I’m a little worried about the transition to a big university setting. Thanks.

MomLive, I think it depends on the honor student. Since they live in the same dorm they do tend to form friendships with other honors students in their building. However, it’s been our experience with our daughter (currently a sophomore) that she meets and bonds with kids depending on the activities she is involved with. She came from a small private school too but has really blossomed at USC, joining a sorority and making tons of friends. There are so many different clubs and activities, there will be a “fit” for your son and he’ll have loads of opportunities for meeting other students both in, and out, of the honors college.

Son just got an email that he is scheduled to receive a scholarship award. Does anyone know what this means ? and does it have anything to do with capstone, or is that all separate?

DS just got the same email. At least we know they were sent out today (May 5th)., waiting will be over. Also mentions invite to Scholars Day, April 10.

happy dance for everyone getting those emails!
I think the Honors kids tend to bond…Son is still best friends with a core group of kids he met in Maxcy freshman year and for those out of staters who are hesitant…his three roommates for the past 3 years are all native SC’ers and he’s a NY’er

Yea! Son got his email also. Of course, he didn’t think to tell me. Thanks to you guys, I knew to ask him. This is a welcome surprise, didn’t expect scholarships until the end of March.

does anyone know if you get those scholarship emails if your only scholarship is SC Life (education lottery)? or does it mean you get something specifically from the university?

^My understanding is it is in addition to the Life scholarships. The Life scholarships aren’t awarded by the colleges but by the state- doesn’t matter which SC college you attend. So, yes, it should be a scholarship from USC on top of the Life.

I take that back ^. I just went on to son’s VIP account and looked under Financial Awards and the only thing listed was the Life Scholarship. Maybe that is all some kids get. That surprises me because all students with a certain GPA get the Life in SC so I assumed that the Honors college scholarships would be in addition to that. Perhaps the Honors scholarships haven’t been posted yet.

Yes, I looked in VIP too and saw the LIFE listed. it’s been there a couple days now. What you originally said makes sense though, as the email was from the university and the LIFE scholarship is from the state.

sparky, the email we got says: Exciting news is on the way—be sure to check your mailbox over the next few days! We’re sending out scholarship award notifications in the mail today, March 5th–and you’re scheduled to receive one. Congratulations on your scholarship!

I’m eligible for the McKissick, and I didn’t get an e-mail. Maybe it was for Woodrow students? And McKissick, Cooper, etc. kids find out over the next few days? Who knows!

I really hope I get an e-mail soon! I’ll probably call USC on Monday if my inbox is still empty! (:
