Congrats SMK821! I hope my D joins you next year. I’ve loved that school since I first read about it.

Nothing in the mail here. Guess we’ll have to wait until Tuesday. (no mail on monday)

yeah, greg, mine is still “in review” as well. I’m really nervous, does that mean I didn’t get in? All the accepted people found out… could it be location? Maybe some admissions counselors put their decisions up and other didn’t.

iltli92, I’m guessing the same. Apparently one counselor put up status online and the international director of admissions sent email to intl students. Everyone else is simply doing it the old fashioned way - by US mail. Gotta wait 'til Tuesday!

My S was admitted today! We checked his status on the admissions portal this morning to get the good news. Wooster is somewhat of a safety for him and we are hoping for some merit aid. But it’s definitely been high on his list since we visited last summer. Wonderful school!

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, but now I’m pretty worried for myself. I think I’m getting too worked up though. I’m just excited for my first decision, ha. It appears that it is one counselor, as I’m assuming the two people who had a reply already are with one counselor. I just checked all the counselor’s locations. I’m guessing we are right, rational2.

My D got her admittance letter by regular mail yesterday (live in NE Ohio) with Dean’s scholarship offer. Still says other scholarships are being considered and if receives, you pick the best amount. BTW, Wooster is either 1, 2, or 3 on list, has been 1, but again will come down to money. My question is: On the College Board site, it has a section that talks about the average total indebtedness at graduation. $25140 at Wooster. How do they get that figure?

My D’s status via the Admissions Portal changed to “Admitted” sometime between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

^^^ Same here. S’s status changed to “Admitted” around midnight eastern. They must have hanged it on Saturday. Maybe they do read this thread and noticed the confusion they sowed :-)

Now it’s waiting for the envelope to see what else, if any, goes with the admission.

Ugh, my status still gives me the same old message. I’m kind of worried now. If they were to deny me, they wouldn’t want to do it via the portal. Anyone from Western NY hear from the protal?

ps13,

Thank you for sharing the info about the actual admittance letter. D is much more excited after hearing that there is a possibility of a dean’s scholarship in that mailing.

My understanding of the average total indebtedness at graduation figure - that is the average amount of undergraduate loans Wooster students have taken out while attending the college. Wooster’s figure may be higher than some colleges because some of the money that might have gone towards need-based aid goes towards merit aid. Also probably depends on how much money a college is able to spend on each student.

Involved Mom,
So that doesn’t include the parent’s share? That is just in the amount of student loans they themselves are in debt with?

ps13,

That’s my understanding - but since these figures are reported to College Board directly from the colleges, I would verify with the Wooster financial aid office. I’m not sure if colleges are consistent about how this is reported. For more info and statistics comparing colleges, you may want to check out the College Navigator website.

I think student debt is considered to be the amount a student borrows from federal student loan programs. It does not include private loans. Since Wooster generally meets need, this amount is significantly reduced for most students.

My S has applied, but his portal status still says “in review.” He had a very good interview and has been in touch with a coach. We live in New England and Ohio seems a bit far away, but COW might be worth the distance. My brother and sister are alums.
S’s first choice is Clark University, another CTCL, much closer to home. And he has been accepted with good merit aid to Drew University. But I think COW is pretty impressive and a good match for S. Am I correct in my understanding that the Dean’s award does not require a supplemental essay?

Yes, you are correct.

Thanks, FLVADAD. Suddenly I worried that we may have misread that! --not that applying for the Scholar’s award would have been a bad thing. Truly, I think S hesitated to write that essay because of the bind he might be in if COW made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He has not yet visited COW. We will visit if he is accepted. With current travel security measures, far away colleges require an extra bit of consideration. Not like when I was a kid and could stumble onto a EWK-BOS flight 10 minutes before departure and pay on the plane.

merlin, I understand. We are having the same discussions regarding about far away schools. It’s funny though. With my first daughter, my wife was insistent that she go to school within a reasonable distance. Fortunately, everything worked out perfectly at a school about 60 miles away. That was great! However, by the time she was a junior we moved over 12 hours away. We adjusted. Well she graduated and took a job that’s about another 13 hours in the opposite direction, Lol. We are extremely happy for her, but hate the logistics.

The second oldest is now in college and she’s also 12 hours away, and if the youngest ends up at Wooster, all three of my kids will be at least 1-2 days drive away…(sigh). I never imagined these days would come so soon.

Where does the time go? My first S attends a college 2 1/2 hours away. That seems nearly perfect. He’s in his 3rd year and has a car this year. We used to do the round trip transport. That was tough! No trains or buses. My husband and I work for a public school system on a teacher contract, so very little flexibility with our schedules.

Funny thing happened today. My sister, Chicago resident, COW alum, phoned me from COW. She was there with her son, also a HS senior. I had planned would meet her and my nephew there next month. But she felt her son needed motivation to finish his app, so went earlier. She was marveling at how beautiful it is and how little she appreciated all the amentities when she attended in the '70’s. She was in a room with fireplace and leather chairs, students with laptops around the fire. Outside cold, but green with patches of snow. I had just come inside from shoveling12 inch deep snow while more was coming down. COW sounds idyllic!

Finally received acceptance letter for D with a nice handwritten note from the admissions rep for our area. Grateful for the merit, but it unfortunately will not be affordable for us. When we visited a few months ago, one of the admissions reps told us that merit awards could be stacked. However, the letter she received today states that it will not be stacked. Very disappointed since my bagpiper son was interested in Wooster too, but he won’t get the merit his sister. Best of luck to those of you who receive their letters today and are able to attend this great school.
