When does college mail start coming?

I took the PSAT in October and checked “yes” to giving my information to colleges. So far I haven’t gotten any mail yet though, have you guys gotten any this year? I’m not sure when it usually shows up, but I hope my PSAT was high enough!

Why do you “need” college mail? It is just marketing material. Use books like the Fiske Guide to Colleges, search tools, and websites like this. Go find the colleges that make sense for you. Don’t be swayed by marketing.

@intparent I don’t “need” it. I’m just curious, and I’d like to know if other students are getting it yet or not. I know it doesn’t mean the schools are interested - I’m just excited to get started looking at colleges as a sophomore.

If I remember correctly, I starting getting emails before physical mail. I think that starts coming closer to junior year, when most students start taking the search more seriously. I could be completely wrong, though. ^^’

At this point (my D is a Sr.) we would like it to stop. Don’t worry, you will soon be bombarded.

Majority of college mail we get goes straight into the trash. It’s always the same few schools who keep sending stuff and my kids are not the least interested in the schools who do this. If anything it’s a turn-off…

From what I recall Quinnipiac University is one of the worst offenders. We’ve never had any interaction with that school yet they keep on sending us things.

College mail has nothing to do with scores - My daughter has gotten ivy league, military, in state and out of state public and private schools at all levels, for profit schools etc. Getting mail from a college in no way says that they are recruiting you or even offer a major that you would have any interest in. Basically it is junk mail. Also psat’s are not the only way to get on college mail list. My daughter has been getting the junk mail since 9th grade. I can’t wait for it to stop. I have another daughter in 8th grade so my mailman would love a break.

@momtogirls2 Really? I’ve only gotten mail from elite schools. I’ve been getting mail from Case Western, UChicago, NYU and Kenyon since I was a freshman. Nothing else, but I’ve been consistently getting mail from them over and over again. But yes, it’s not a recruitment. That would be ridiculous.

@ab2002 are you talking about just before the psats? Yes she got tons. Some were associate level only schools, some were medical institute type programs, some were ivy league etc. I usually quickly double check that no real mail gets missed. I think she may have somehow gotten on a mailing list with the wrong year of graduation. If your talking about after the PSAt’s in 10th grade you may have checked a box not to send you info? This fall there were days she probably got over 40 mailings (I doubt she ever counted). Today she only got a few - Mount Mary, Hillside, and Colgate University (they are sitting near me).

@momtogirls2 No. I’ve been getting mail for a lot longer than before the PSAT. I have 2 postcards and 3 packets from NYU, two letters for UChicago, 3 from Case and 5 postcards from Kenyon. Mind you I did not sign up for any of the mailing lists.
