When does the "better" housing fill up?

I'm not sure if there is anyone who went through this all last year hanging around, but I had a quick question. I'm wondering if there is a general time when the generally thought to be "better" housing fills up? I'm talking about Morewood, Mudge, Stever, etc.

Sorry if this is a silly question! :)

I’m not sure, but your housing preference goes by the date you gave your deposit in. So the earlier you get it in, the likelier the chance you get your first pick.

There’s no “better” housing – it all boils down to personal preferences. There are several detailed posts here on CC by a current and former students, alum and parents…you can comb through. Also the FB pages for the previous classes can give you a flavor of this topic with multiple threads and wall posts created on this very topic.

CMU Dorms differ by room size (tiny, average and large), location, room type (single, double, suite) and proximity to various buildings (no dorm is far from campus), and co-ed by building, floor or wing.
IMHO, you should begin with the first basic issue- do you want to use a communal bathroom or a semi-private one (meaning literally you get to close the door when you do your business)-- and if this doesn’t matter to you- than you have many options to consider. At CMU, the dorms with the proverbial community bathrooms down the hall are called “standard doubles” and those with the bathroom access to you through your own room (and one other) are called “prime double”. The housing website can list the types.

Little know fact a popular dorm “mudge” has some rooms that are less than desirable relative to other dorms. There are basement rooms in Mudge – people overlook that and get caught up in getting into Mudge , but people in Donnor, Morewood, Stever and Rez are all happy and can chime in and tell you about their wonderful experiences.

Bottom line-- you don’t pick until mid-late May, you’re not assigned until late June/early July and not told where you’ve been assigned until mid/late July.

Check out the earlier posts throughout CMU CC threads-- lots of details on the dorm types by many frequent posters.

There’s no “better” housing and no “worse” housing either. They all come with furniture and welcoming RAs and freshman like you !

Congrats again.

In the end, you’ll love your dorm and your freshman year regardless-- people are people and they are sorted throughout all the dorms without any particular unique traits showing in one dorm over the other.

the residence on 5th is the furthest off campus

There are pros and cons to all the dorms. I lived in Stever freshman year. Some of the rooms are tiny (for instance, the room next to the stairwell >.>). However, the temperature control can keep your room at whatever temperature you prefer year-round, while Stever is still more energy-efficient than all the other dorms.

Morewood’s closest to campus; it’s also an old building. I dunno what the freshman part is like.

I don’t really know anything about Mudge.

The Residence is, as said, the farthest freshman dorm from campus, as it’s on Fifth Avenue. I don’t really know too much besides that, though I hear it’s nice.

I’ve lived in Mudge two years. It’s awesome. I love it. The building itself is an old Victorian-style mansion with a grand hall, a study library, a spiral staircase, and a garden/pond out back.

Keep in mind that it’s unlikely RD students will actually get Mudge rooms this year, because a bunch of the special kid programs (SHS, QSSS, humanities scholars, etc) are being moved to Mudge House and there will be floors reserved for them. So what’s left over might not be as great.

i was in e-tower. it was awesome, aside from being the CS floor and scaring away the four floors of girls above us

Throwing my two cents in, I’d go for Mudge and Stever doubles first, followed by morewood, then donner, then the Res (which though nice, is far from campus)
