Here is how it works: You start out saying "When I was 5 I wanted to be..." then you gradually work your way up to the present.

Example:

In seventh grade, I had a fantastically inspiring environmental science teacher (crappy course, but she taught it magnificently) who opened my eyes to environmental and energy issues. As a result of her class, I wanted to be a plasma physicist like nothing else because it appealed to my scientific AND activist-y personalities*.....*

I knew what I wanted to do with my life since I was 5. It is just that the criteria just got more specific over the years. At 5, I knew I wanted to be a scientist. At 11, when I started programming C++, that narrowed down into Computer Programmer/Scientist. Then now, I want to be in the research field regarding computers like robotics, quantum computing, algorithms, computer architectures and ect.

When I was 5 I probably wanted to be an actress. When I was 8 I wanted to be a cashier. When I was 9 I wanted to be a lawyer. When I was 10 I wanted to be Donald Trump’s apprentice. When I was 11 I wanted to be a model/actress. When I was 13 I wanted to be a pyschologist. When I was 14 I wanted to be a nutritionist. When I was 15 I wanted to be a nurse. Now I want to be a pharmacist.

3rd: Work at an animal shelter…because I didn’t know that it was a volunteer position
Later in 3rd: FBI agent (lolwut)
4th: Comic book artist (I had my own series and everything)
7th: Author or Journalist
9th: Research psychologist
Now: I have no idea, and even worse, I can’t remember what my dreams were when I was 5

When I was 5, I think I wanted to be Italian…

and when I was 12, I still wanted to be Italian, but I also wanted to be an engineer. Or maybe a lawyer.

When I was 15, I discovered the beauty of biology. Then I wanted to be a research scientist.

When I was 17, I had an internship at a lab and learned how much I hate bench work, so I decided to be a doctor instead. I still love biology though.
