When is it too late to choose a career?

I am currently a junior in high school in MN. I have it narrowed down to between two things that I really want to do in life. I either want to be a doctor or an environmental engineer. Sounds totally different, right? I know, so that's is why I need help. I want to be a doctor, but I am not sure if the rigor and time of attending the extra years for medical school would suit me. I am also interested in enviro engineering and going to Colorado school of mines because that is my dream location and they have an amazing rep of getting jobs for students who just graduated. However, if I don't excel at engineering I cannot switch from engineering to another career. Thing is, I know a lot more about anatomy, chem, and biology and my last physics class was when I was just a freshman. I am planning on taking AP physics next year and am afraid that I will love engineering and it will be too late.

Thanks for your help!

It is easier to change from engineering to a different major, than to move from that other major into engineering. So start out in engineering and see how well it goes for you.

And as for the question you used for the title of the thread, the correct answer is: When you are dead.

Life is long, and there are many surprises.

Thank you happymom!!

I agree with happymomof1. It is very difficult to join engineering in your second year (or later). In terms of med school, you have a lot of flexibility in what you can major in. It is very important that you maintain a high GPA and score well on the MCAT. I wouldn’t go to a school that would limit you to a certain career.

Thanks Pat! I agree that I shouldn’t go to a college that limits what I want to do in life.
