When is the best time to take the SAT?

I’m currently a sophomore and these are the schools I want to apply to in my Junior year:

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Stanford University
MIT
University of Michigan

These are the schools I want to apply to. I have no idea when I should take the SAT and I heard that there’s a thingcalled PSAT and I haven’t taken it yet. I have no idea where to start. So when is the best time to take it? And do I have to sign up to take it?

In the east, one normally takes the PSAT in the fall of one’s Junior year. Usually one’s school signs one up automatically for that. The SAT may be taken every three months or so; check the collegeboard.org site. A good plan is to take the PSAT in October, the SAT in January, and retake the SAT in March if you want, thus saving May and June for other testing. You sign up for the SAT online, usually a month or so before you take the test.

Why your junior year and not senior? I would suggest fall or winter of Junior year, and possibly a spring/summer test. Also twice during senior year. That is if you’re not satisfied with the score you get the previous time(s).
