I am newly enrolling to UVA and was wondering when the classes start? Is it same for everybody? Can you come to school earlier and stay in the dorms?

Get familiar with the following link, it’s really helpful:

[Academic Calendars: University Registrar at the University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/registrar/calendar.html)

The first day of classes is Tuesday, August 28

Orientation, a period where first-year students move in and have activities to get further introduced to the university, is Saturday, August 25 - Monday, August 27.

Last year first-year students were broken down into two move in days, Friday or Saturday, to ease traffic and congestion. You will be assigned a day well in advance based on your dorm assignment which you usually receive in early July.

are the dorm assignments ABSOLUTELY randomized? Or are there room for the students to list some of their preferences?

You can’t list preferences of specific dorms if that’s what you mean. You list your preference for single vs. double (which would give you greater odds for some dorms over others). The other questions all have to do with matching you with a roommate (if you don’t specify a roommate by name).

I know it seems very difficult to leave it up to chance but it really does work out. There are things to really embrace about all of the dorms. My son lived in old dorms and couldn’t imaging his first year experience anywhere else. My friends daughter was in new dorms and thought those were ‘the best’. You can read here on the forum why people feel Gooch/Dillard where wonderful for them. All of these students may have chosen something else if they had been given the choice before move in, but they embraced the experience and it worked out great for them.

Where can your list single vs. double or answer questions about dorms? I could not find it anywhere.
