Is it ok to send an update around March 18th if its a national competition? Also, for updates, do you only send awards/medals or also updates about any new info about EC's? Thanks.

It is probably too late at this point because the Ivy League schools release their decisions next Thursday. However, if you are wait-listed and that particular Ivy League school is your first choice, then sending an update may be beneficial to you.

As for new info about ECs, I’d say update your activities only if they have significantly altered (i.e. improved; and yes, I know “significantly” is subjective). Otherwise, don’t bother.

^ I’m a junior trying to decide if I should study for the USAChO next year. I know that I can make it easily since I was 2 away this year. I know that the date is really close, but I feel like all the time I spent studying for it would be wasted if I had nothing to show for it at all =[

You’re a junior? I don’t think you should be worrying about notifying colleges at this point . . . but you will have something to put on your application when the time comes!

^
What?

10 char

You can put anything you feel is relevant in updates.
March 18th would be too late in my opinion. An update a week before admissions letters roll out would seem like a last-minute desperation move from my point of view.

Eh, I think I’ll just go for it since it wouldn’t hurt. Possible situations:

Already accepted: Dosen’t matter.
Waitlisted: Might tip me over.
Rejected: Slim chances but, still might get my folder reopened.

I think you can update the schools if you are waitlisted.

I don’t see any reason not to give it a shot. Sure, it will be a lot of work, but it will probably be commensurately rewarding. A last minute notification of a significant award can only help, not hurt you.

Good luck.
