I'm a community college student, and in my quest to transfer I've slowly realized that the transfer advisers at this school aren't going to be of much help to me. I spoke with a representative from the large state university in my city, and she said my best bet is to directly contact the schools that I'm interested in.

I'll be finished at CC in December 2012 (the end of the fall semester). When should I start sending out to schools I'm interested in? Should I start now, or should I start when I'm preparing applications?

It's a shame I won't have proper guidance from my counselors (there was no guidance counselor at my HS either), but luckily this forum has provided me with a lot of help and insights into the process.

If you are finishing cc in december 2012 and that you want to enroll right away, you’ll have to find a school that accept transfer for spring 2012. It’s not the greatest idea since many schools don’t offer it and you would have to pass on a bunch of great school.
However, you should send an e-mail as soon as you have a legit reason to do so, it won’t hurt you and show that you are interested in the school. The main point is to show that you are not trying to fit the school in a required list of 6 schools but you are genuinely interested and that you planned that quite a while ago.

In my case, I sent an e-mail to my top choice in september, I am still working on my essays but they know I am really interested. It might not be the most important thing but in case you apply to a very selective school or are borderline, it can be the little thing.

Right you are, I should have clarified that although I am finishing in Dec 2012 I won’t be looking to transfer until the next fall. I’ll probably take the half-year to visit prospective schools or possibly intern.
