When should I expect to hear back from VCU?

I applied to VCU in mid-November for Biology/Pre-Dental. I'm OOS, have very good EC's and recommendations, a strong GPA, and pretty good SAT's for VCU. Everything showed up as recieved around November 20th. My ACT scores showed up as received on December 1st (the scholarship deadline). I guess I got pretty lucky with that! When should I expect to hear back from VCU?

I received my decision 2 weeks after I submitted my common application, but 1 week after everything (transcripts, SAT scores) were in. I thought the usual time was 2 weeks, but I think since you applied right around the time of the scholarship deadline and that there was an influx of applications, they are probably very busy right now. Since it is the holiday season, I think this will slow them down as well. Realistically though, I think you should expect something in the next 2 to 2.5 weeks.

Thank you very much for the reply! I’ll be patient! Just wanted to know how long it was taking for other students who have applied to VCU. Thanks again!

@sumobats - how did you get your acceptance notification? Was it on the VIP page that you have to log into? Our son applied in late November, and they have everything. We have visited, and his stats should make the decision a no-brainer–but of course you want to hear the official news.

@WaitingInCPA‌ I’m in the exact same boat as your son. I applied in late November and everything has been received. Now I’m just waiting to hear back!

My son received the following advice from an admissions counselor recently, “be patient, you’ll hear soon.” Not easy for a senior to take or understand. He had applied for biomedical engineering the first week of September and his required items were received by VCU the first week of October.

He spoke to the counselor at a luncheon on December 13th. The counselor said that she was surprised he hadn’t heard yet, and the fact that he had applied for biomedical engineering could have contributed to the delay. She also mentioned other factors can affect the timing of getting official notice.

My understanding from speaking to other parents at the luncheon was that most of their kids waited about 2-6 weeks. My son finally got his official notice on the 18th of December, so a little over 2 months for him.

Hopefully you or your child will hear soon. Oh, I almost forgot, the counselor said they only notify applicants through the mail, not online. In fact his application status page is unchanged since he received his notice.

@waitinginCPA I initially received a letter. About 3 or so weeks later I received an email, but the VIP page was never updated. I received an additional email and mailed letter about my acceptance after that too, so don’t fret if you think it may have been lost in the mail. They will notify you many times with different information (ex. Congratulations on your acceptance: here are some research opportunities offered at VCU).

@asixbn was that the scholars luncheon? I received the same invitation but couldn’t attend. My letter said that the invitation meant that I received a scholarship, but I still haven’t gotten information about what scholarship I received. I also find it interesting as to how you received that invitation before getting official acceptance. I’m just trying to figure out how VCU is going about all these things. It seems as though they are waiting to process all apps that were submitted before Dec. 1 before awarding scholarships, but it doesn’t make sense why they would do the honors luncheon so early.

I just recieved my acceptance package in the mail! What a great Christmas gift!

Sumobats, yes that was the scholars luncheon. I’m guessing your letter was pretty much the same as my sons, and if it is it doesn’t quite say that you received a scholarship. My son’s letter said “if” he applied by December 1st, and “if” he met the scholarship criteria, he would receive a scholarship. So there are two qualifying “ifs” in his letter.

Based on my conversations with admission folks at that luncheon it seems that if you were invited you stand a really good chance of being offered some kind of scholarship, provided you applied by December 1st. The luncheon was really more of a recruiting luncheon than a scholarship information session. That’s probably why it is so early, because they’re trying to sell VCU to the students they think are the most academically qualified who have expressed an interest in VCU.

Good luck!

I’m still waiting on mine and I applied by the December 1st deadline. I’m guessing it’s because i applied to the undergraduate business school

Our son finally received his acceptance notification from VCU! Next wait is to find out if he receives any scholarship money.
