When Should I Take the MCAT

Hey Everybody,

Let me first just say thank you for any one that takes the time to provide their thoughts on this thread. I am currently a sophomore and was planning on taking the MCAT either this summer '13 or wait until January (winter break) to take it. I have completed gen chem, orgo chem 1&2, A&P 1&2, genetics, and gen Bio. I have yet to take Physics or Biochem but will be taking it in the Fall 2013 semester.

I do however plan on taking the Kaplan MCAT prep course over the summer if I do take the MCAT in August. My only concern is that I have not had a real course in Physics since a general overview in high school and I have not taken Biochem. I am concerned that because of my lack of knowledge in those courses it will negatively affect my MCAT performance.

Has anyone taken a Kaplan MCAT prep course and is willing to tell me how in depth they go into helping you prepare?

Also is it possible to teach myself the Physics needed to perform well on the MCAT? If Yes, how would I go about studying for that (ie. buying a physics textbook, buying an MCAT Physics book)

Any Input Will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don’t know if you’ve made up your mind but I would recommend taking all of the introductory classes before taking the mcat (genchem, genbio, orgo, genphysics). Upper level classes do not tend to help to much with mcat studying as most of the material is too detailed for the mcat. However, upper lever classes can help but they are not necessary in my mind.

In terms of physics, if you’ve never been exposed to it, it might be best for you to take the class, but you can certainly learn the mcat physics material outside of a class! Most of the mcat is on the basics and not as much detailed stuff.

Hello!
My S is currently a Junior and planning on taking the MCAT in January 2014.
He is not able to spend quality time to prepare for MCAT due to current course work load and ECs. Can he register for MCAT for the plan date (Jan 2014) and reschedule it to a later date? Thanks in advance for your feedback and comments.
