When Should You Transfer?

So I'm still a bit confused about when I should be applying as a transfer student between UCs and how everything works. I'm currently trying to transfer into UCSD.

From what I gather I would be best off applying as a Junior so I would hopefully enter UCSD as a Junior and finish both Junior and Senior years there.

Does this mean I need to apply as a Sophomore in November so I can enter as a Junior come next year? Or do I apply as a Junior in November?

My GPA freshman year was only a 3.0 so would this mean my GPA I'm using to apply as a transfer student will just be 3.0 or do I have all of Junior year to try and improve it? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You apply at the beginning of sophomore year, so you can enter as a junior.

They will look at your grades from the first term of sophomore year as well. You report these in the winter, in something called the application update.

So my Winter/Spring grades won’t be looked at?

If you submit your winter grades before Jan 31st, then yes, they will. Spring grades are not considered for your admission decision but you will look at your final official transcript after they admit you because you’ll need to send it in to them.

Winter/Spring courses will appear in the Terms and Conditions of acceptance, they’ll tell you what grades you need in your classes. If you don’t meet those requirements your admission may be rescinded. So, they kinda matter.

Almost everyone I know were asked to submit winter grades for UCLA or UC Berkeley. But our school is on the semester system and winter was a six week intersession that ended after the Jan 31st deadline.

Then you would write IP (in progress) in your transfer update. Also after the term, the ucs have a place where you can update your app again after the transfer update
