When to first take the SAT?

So I'm a rising junior and I'm a bit confused as to when I should take my first SAT. I really don't want to have to retake it at all, but if I must I'd like to get my retake done junior year as well.
I just ordered the Blue Book and it should be delivered tomorrow. If I start studying tomorrow, for say, an hour or two a day, when would be the best time to take the SAT for the first time, and then for a potential retake? I'm shooting for 2200+. On my sophomore year PSAT, I got a 198 with minimal studying for the math portion the night before, like an hour or two at most (CR was my worst section).

Also, I know there's a wealth of information on CC in the form of user-written study guides, but which one would you say is the most effective? (Silverturtle's, Xiggi's,...etc...)

Thanks so much!

Take it in junior year in dec to get a baseline score. Then you have time to take a course/take more practice test before college applications are due.

^Why do you want to waste your money and opportunity? A better approach is to get you baseline score from practice test. Then do a lot of practice test until you reach a plateau. Then take the real test in the winter of Junior year. Treat that as your only attempt. There is no reason to take the test before you are fully prepared. If necessary, retake it in early Spring. Leave April for AP preparation and June SAT for subject tests.
