When to get an internship...

hey. I was wondering if anyone could inform me as to what the best time is to search for an internship. I will be a college freshman next year and would like to begin doing something in the area i want to work in (int'l relations) but am a little apprehensize about my chances at getting an internship because my only real experience has been a standard high school job(coffee shop). Would it be better to particpate in a summer study abroad thing and maybe a workshop(Univ. of MI has a global business one) than to get an internship?

I think it would be a good idea to visit your college career service office as early as possible to find out information about internships and the programs they offer to help students search. I visited my career office the second semester of my freshman year and they helped me get my summer internship. In the meanwhile, you can search internships online at various job/internship websites, so that you can get an idea of what employers in your field are looking for in interns. Also, since you don’t have much experience, it would be a good idea to try taking some courses in your field and to join clubs related to international relations. Before I got my internship, the only experience I had was the clubs I was in, so you should do fine. Hope this helps.
