When to schedule interviews and tours

Hello...I'm applying to a prep school this year, and was wondering when to schedule the required interviews and tours. Should they be on the weekends, and/or can they be scheduled during Christmas break, Thanksgiving break, and other holidays like that? Thanks! :)>-

Every school has a slightly different schedule, but in general most will interview on Saturdays and most days when their school is in session. Most school have an interview calendar on their admissions pages. None or very few will interview when school is not is session.

Check the calendar. Because most BS have very few days off outside of the long holidays (no time off for Veterans’Day, Columbus Day, etc.,), you may find a couple days they’ll interview that your current school might have off. Saturdays book VERY quickly-- it may already be hard (or impossible) to book one of those, so check as soon as possible. As noted by BlairParent, they don’t interview during their own long breaks (Thanksgiving or pointer break).

You have to remember, the AO’s have lives outside too.

You can’t do tours during the school breaks since the tour guides are students and the offices are closed. I’d just call the admission office and find out when you can visit. You can make appointments now for visits in November or January, etc. Columbus Day and Veterans Day etc are popular visit days as the prep schools are open while public schools may be off.

Schedule ASAP; the slots fill up very quickly, especially on Saturdays and around holidays. As stated above, if the prep school is not in session, in all likelihood, interviews are not offered.

Thanks…I was just thinking that it would be hard to have to drive 2-4 hours every weekend for the tours… :-?

The other thing to point out is that in most/all cases, the tours are conducted by the students. As much as we love talking about our schools and imparting our knowledge on impressionable young minds, once our pre-break obligations are over, we are out of there, and all the potential applicant will see is a beautiful, but empty, campus.

Some schools do offer tours during summer breaks given by day students who are driven there by parents (waiting in a car, thanks for your dedication!) - this info is for 2016-2017 or future applicants as summer has passed.
However, it is true about the beautiful, empty campus.

Just like your present school is closed for school breaks, so are prep schools.

The admissions office does operate during the summer, but the campus will be empty of typical activity.

If you have the flexibility, some say closer to mid-week is better for interviewing, that the Admissions offices are busiest and most rushed Saturday, Friday, and then Monday. If that’s the case, then Tuesday-Thursday might be less stressed.

At my kids’ school (Concord) and probably most other selective schools, interviews are booked solid every day they’re offered, so no particular day is inherently more rushed than any other. So I really wouldn’t worry about that. The rushed days are those where an interviewer is ill and they have to scramble to find another, or when some interviewees arrive late and compress the the schedule.

I agree that it is important to schedule early (now if you haven’t already); for example, Concord’s schedule filled up last year by mid-October. I think they were able to offer an interview to most people on the interview wait list, but there’s no guarantee of that and it may not be on a convenient day for you.

Thank you! My father said he will schedule all interviews and tours this weekend, so we’ll see… :)>-
