When to Start Actively looking for the next school

I'm a Freshman at a college I kind of blundered into attending, a good, solid state school to most but certainly not even close to the kind of intellectual/academic life I was hoping for.

Right now I'm pretty sure I'd like to apply to several top LACs for the upcoming school year.

My question is this: when is it safe to start actively looking into a college (ie visit, talk to admissions, etc.)

I feel like if I start revving up the admissions game too fast, some of these places might think I haven't given my current school a shot (I've been here for more than a month) I don't want to look like I'm trying to be a social climber, I just really messed up college admissions the first time through and I think I have a bit better idea of what I'm looking for in a college now.

thanks

I think it’s good to start early, or at least in November or something. I’m applying to like 6 schools and I’ve already started writing my essays because I don’t want to be stressed out at the end of the semester (finals and stuff). I’m also going to be taking a harder course load next semester so I won’t have much time to work on applications. Additionally, I want to have plenty of time to revise essays.
I’ve contacted some schools and I have an interview set up already… I might be extremely early but I procrastinate so. I would visit in January or February. That’s what the adcom at Lewis & Clark told me, anyway.

I visited colleges over spring break, which wasn’t ideal, because some applications were due before this time, and some of the colleges I visited were also on spring break.
