Hello everyone,
I heard that U Minnesota has rolling admission for international students. I want to know how long it will take for me to know that I am accepted or not. Say I apply by the 2nd or 3rd week of September, when will I get to know?
Thank You

There is no easy answer to this. If you search this subforum you can probably find acceptance threads from past years to get a feel for when decisions start to roll out, but there is no guarantee.

Apply early!

My daughter was not an international student, but it took her about 6 weeks to hear if she was accepted or not. She applied on October 7th and received notification that she was admitted on November 19th. Not sure if there is a similar timetable for international students or not. I would apply as early as you can. The earlier you apply, the earlier you will hear. Good luck!

Over the past few years, most kids received their results late November to late December.

On the website it said that it is rolling admission and they will start sending out decisions in November.

The strength of your application package may also affect how long it takes for you to get an admissions decision. If your stats put you in the top quartile of applicants, you’re more likely to get a timely admissions decision. If you’re towards the lower end of the stats profile for whichever college you applied to, it’s possible that you may have to wait longer than others to receive a decision.

Rolling admissions doesn’t mean “first in first out”. Sending in an application early can certainly be beneficial for some, but I remember reading posts from each of the last several years from students/parents who had been waiting quite some time with no decision in hand.

It seems that UMinn doesn’t tend to waitlist many applicants, and some students will start receiving decisions in November…but others may have to wait longer regardless on when their application was sent in.

Last year D applied end of August, received scholarship offer in mail beginning of Oct. Not sure when accepted as they didn’t send an e-mail notification, but found out by checking App. Tracker in mid-Oct. 7 weeks after applying. She was NMSF and good stats. On the other hand another student at her HS also applied early and complained in January that he hadn’t heard from them yet. He was also NMSF, but not NMF because of so-so grades. Very high test scores. A mixed bag that required further review I guess. Wolverine must be right about amount of time depending on strength of application.

Our home state university in WI also has rolling admissions, and is notorious for giving equal opportunity slow service. Everyone waits for months, D included.

I think they said they will start the review in October. My D submitted the app, transcript, and score 2 weeks ago. Hopefully we will hear back in a month.

I just found my D’s application status has been updated with admission to college of science and engineering this morning. It said the admission package is on the way. So the whole review process was less than a month. A bit shorter than what I expected.

@billcsho, congratulations to you and your daughter. My son was also marked accepted today into the College of Biological Sciences. We haven’t received anything about scholarships, but I am still holding out some hope. I think my son could be in the range for the Gold National. Do you know if more than one scholarship is available? He is a few points short of NMSF in our state, but is a commended scholar.

I received my application tracker information and checked on my application status just yesterday. I found out I was admitted to the college of science and engineering, but the big envelope hasn’t arrived yet.

Yes, it is possible to get several scholarship but I don’t know how competitive is it. I have heard not all NMF get the same scholarships. The scholarship package my D got has multiple components in it. Originally, I thought there is only the 10k by naming it the top choice, but I saw also a smaller one to offset oos tuition, an even smaller research scholarship (for honor program?), and another 4k-8k (4yr combined?) for NM. I am not very familiar with UMN, so I don’t know how is the financial aid compare to other schools in general. But we are very happy for what my D got. Thanks.

Congrats to all! It has been a couple of years, but if I recall the out of state Bio Science and Engineering kids seemed to receive their admission results and merit scholarship info before the in state kids. We didn’t hear about merit scholarships until around February. My son received the freshman research grant. I think it was for 2nd semester and was $2000. He was able to turn his into a summer job for pay. It looks great on a resume.

@Dave_N ~ Definitely still hold out hope for scholarships. Last year my daughter applied on October 7th, was admitted on November 19th and received noticed that she had received the Gold National Scholarship on December 20th. To all, if you think your children are going to attend, then I would apply for housing as soon as they open the application. Last year they opened it near the end of November and my daughter applied for housing soon after. She was able to get her 1st choice housing and is truly enjoying her first year in CSE.

^ I have read about this and there is a $25 deposit or application fee, isn’t it?
Oh, and which dorm is the best?

I was just accepted to the CLA.
Applied sometime last month.
33 ACT
25/257
3.82 UW

The deposit is $25 and non-refundable. If there is the slightest chance you will be attending, I would definitely apply for housing as soon as it opens up. They assign housing based on the date you pay your housing deposit and you can apply even if you haven’t received your acceptance yet.

DS is at Frontier Hall in the Engineering LLC. He chose Frontier over Middlebrook. I would definitely choose the dorms with air-conditioning – it was unusually HOT and Humid in August and September. DS did say that it was miserable having to eat at Pioneer Hall during the hot weather.

For scholarships: DS received his scholarships in December and February (I can’t remember exactly).

I got my scholarship offer in the mail on 10/11, and my app tracker changed to accepted into CSE the next day. I’m not even a NMSF so I don’t think I’m eligible for any of those scholarships. I did get the max presidential scholarship ($10k/yr) and the research scholarship ($1700) though, so I’m hoping I got into honors. Fingers crossed I will still get more scholarships later on, but I’m still very thankful I have what I have (and that I found out so early). 35 ACT and 4.0 and ranked 1/500+ students. A lot of music extracurricular and community service with leadership in both.

^ So they sent you the National Merit scholarship congratulation letter even you are not NMSF? How weird.

@billcsho no, the scholarship I got does not give NMSFs preference! It is equivalent to the gold scholar award though, but it is a separate scholarship.
