@billcsho ~ Which dorm is best depends on the student. Have you guys had a chance to go on a campus tour yet? That will help your child decide which is the best dorm for them. For many, Baily is not ideal because it is located on the St. Paul campus and far from the main campus. You have to take a bus to get to the main campus because it is not within walking distance. Many honors students want to live in Middlebrook, but you have to factor is it better to live in honors housing or live in a LLC (living learning community) where you can live with other students in the same major? I also would suggest living in a dorm that has air conditioning. It was so hot earlier in the year, it would have been very uncomfortable for my daughter to live in a dorm without air conditioning. One of my daughter’s friends from high school lived in a dorm without air conditioning and was dying for the first few weeks. She had a lot of trouble sleeping at night because her dorm room was so hot. My daughter is living in a LLC. She’s in WISE (women in science and engineering) in Frontier. She really likes it. Most of the girls on her floor are in the same classes as she is and they study and do their homework together. Plus, the Taylor House Tutoring Center is located in Frontier and they offer tutoring services for many of the initial engineering classes. Living in a LLC has really helped my daughter be successful in all of her classes. She is very happy with her choice.

Yes, there is a $25 dollar nonrefundable deposit fee when applying for housing. Totally worth it if you even think you are going to attend there next year. If you decide to attend there, then you have to pay an additional $250 deposit fee the Spring before you attend that will get deducted from the amount you owe for room and board when they send out your tuition statement in the Fall.

Just wanted to add something about the dorms with air conditioning. In my daughter’s dorm (Frontier) they had trouble with mold in some of the dorm rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor because it was so hot and the air conditioning units had run constantly for so long. They had to move some students out of their rooms to temporary housing while they cleaned up the mold and replaced the carpeting. They then decided to turn off all air conditioning units for the remainder of the year so that no more mold problems would occur. My daughter’s room was on a higher floor and thankfully she did not have any issues with mold in her room.

If you have any more questions relating to housing, please feel free to ask.

No experience with other dorms or with daughters, but my S lived in Middlebrook and loved it (best dorm cafeteria on campus) and only 2 rooms for each bathroom. He is an electrical engineering junior and still has many female engineering friends and many other Honor’s friends that he met at Middlebrook. He says that starting Soph year your classes are with the same group of kids until you graduate, so why not take advantage of the Honor’s dorm and meet other kids because there comes a time when you need a break from your engineering pals.:p

My application tracker changed today from the “thank you for applying” message to “Your application is being carefully considered”. Does anyone know about how long it takes after that to get an acceptance?

33 ACT, College of Biological Sciences
Applied early September

@hville7 - when did you submit your application? I submitted mine on Sept. 25 and this is on my application tracker as of today (10/19):
October 14, 2013: We have forwarded your application to the college for review. Review of fall applications begins in January and decisions are sent on a rolling basis beginning in February. If you have applied for spring semester, you can expect to receive a decision within the next four weeks.
BTW I’m a transfer student. Does the school take freshmen into consideration first then move on to transfer applicants? Or they are treated the same?

@WindyNation I’m guessing the process is different for transfer students. I submitted around that same date but I applied for freshman admission. Initially my tracker said review wouldn’t start until November, but then it changed to the “carefully reviewing your application” message on 10/11 and then to accepted the following day. If you are a top student and above the average accepted stats, I wouldn’t doubt that you will get a decision sooner than what they list on the tracker! Good luck!

Just found out today I got accepted into Carlson. I applied in early September. How hard is it to transfer between the colleges because in reality I am pretty much going in undecided between marketing and engineering?

nickps - here is the link explaining the process for transferring into CSE. If you are serious about switching to CSE then you need to pay attention to what courses you select freshman year so that you could stay in marketing or go to CSE without messing up your 4 year plan. Keep your GPA high and fulfill the prerequisites.

For anyone who’s been following this thread, my application tracker said I was accepted today, it only took about 24 hours since the “careful consideration update”!

@Dave_N thanks for the update about honors, I just checked mine and it was updated also, yay! For some reason they haven’t been sending me any emails so I never would have looked otherwise. My scholarships didn’t show up on the tracker so I think you just have to watch the mail. A lot of people don’t get offers until spring (and sometimes even later I think) though.

@Dave_N
Thanks for the info. We also received the admission package today.
After reading your post, I went in and found my D to be admitted to the Honors Program too. I guess all the early admissions are strong candidates that are likely to be in the Honors Program too.
