I'm sure this is a silly question, but when I'm notified about the George Washington Scholarship contest, I'll also know whether or not I was accepted into the university, right?

I can't say this with 100% certainty, but that is why the GWHS requires your entire application by Dec. 15th, so you can find out everything early.

It would be kinda stupid for them to invite you to the finals in March without guaranteeing you got in, no?

Yes, I'm sure you're right... it's just that I'm growing so impatient! It would be wonderful to be chosen for the scholarship, but I'm most concerned about actually being accepted.

I think that if you're good enough to get the scholarship, you're good enough to be accepted. Since the scholarship is much more selective.

The last comment raises another question:

Is being selected as a finalist for GWHS the same thing as "getting the scholarship," meaning are finalists guaranteed some amount of merit aid just because they're finalists?

Judging from the info on the website, I think only the final winners get money... I'm pretty sure you don't get anything for just being selected as a finalist.

I reckon that's true, but I remember there being gradations of awards (half, whole, not sure what else) and that's what caused me to wonder.

Really? I mean, you can receive partial awards? Somehow I thought you received full awards or nothing, but it would be great if there were something in between...

The only partial award that I'm sure exists is half. Several people on the old CC received one last year.

Hm, that's cool. I would be very content with a partial award; even content with just being nominated and getting to go back to Lexington in March!

Kareelily16, did you get chosen as a GWH finalist? As of now, I think I'm the only one on the board who hasn't! :-( Oh well, wasn't totally expecting it in the first place anyway. If I recall correctly, your stats are quite good, and at least on par with those of Dima, so I think you should have a good shot! Good luck!

No Morgan, I'm sorry to say I wasn't chosen... (Thanks for the compliments, though) So now you're not the only one, at least. It is disappointing, but what's really too bad is that now I won't know if I'm accepted until April!
Something to remember: the letter did say that something like over 800 people applied for the scholarship, so as rejected people I'd assume we've got lots of company!

Yeah, it did say that. I replied to your other post too, and welcomed you to the GWH-rejected club! I suppose it's a really subjective process, just like the entire admissions process. I'm sure you will be accepted RD thoug, just hang on until April!

I have a question about the money value of the scholarships. Is the "full scholarship" full tuition or full ride? Is the "half scholarship" half of total cost or half of tuition? How many of the 100 are selected to receive each scholarship?

Thanks.

I'm not sure how many are selected for full, half (or any other value we're not aware of), but last summer my interviewer told me it's like this: even though need isn't necessarily considered in the choosing of finalists and "full"/"half" winners, it is part of the equation afterward. From your financial aid information, it is determined if you're "needy" and how need you are. If you're not needy, your award is full/half tuition. If you are needy, your award is full/half the cost of attending. There are probably gradations between that, though.
