When will we hear about financial aid and scholarships?

I was just looking at collegeboard, I’m amazed at how much cost for OOS kids has gone up. The figure on collegeboard is $35k per year while the figure I got was $47k (I assume the cost estimate they give me on the award notice is for one year) O.o Over 10k hike… they must be desperate for money.

I spoke to someone at the scholarship office and I was told I can get an extension until May 1st to respond about the Geisinger scholarship.
littlefalls: my sister is not involved with any mentor program as far as I know, but she LOVES michigan. she too applied EA yale and to a bunch of top tier schools, and was rejected from most. now it seems crazy that she wanted to go elsewhere - she is perfect for mich.

i also got into cornell today so i doubt i will be needing this extension offer anymore…does anyone know if these scholarships get passed on?

Very bad estimated financial aid today…

EFC=4000
GRANTS:7k
WS:3k
Loans:6k
bad financial aid, expected a bit more in grants

p.s i’m out of state

@SpaceUnion
The Cost of Attendance is “the estimated cost of attending the University of Michigan for a full academic year (two semesters–Fall and Winter terms), including estimated amounts for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, plus a modest allowance for personal/miscellaneous expenses.”
So the Collegeboard figures are accurate if you add up the tuition, room and board, etc.

Those of you who get your financial aid packages, post your EFC and In-State/OOS status along with the package so that people can get an idea of what kind of money is going out and how much of their need may be met. Thank you. :D

Out-Of-State
FAFSA calculated EFC: ~$1600

Scholarship:$20000
Grants:$24802
Loans:$0
Work-Study:$953

Total:$45755
CoA:$46999

so I’m about $1200 short, but I think I’m going to take out like $4000 in loans every year to cover the work-study, my parents’ EFC, and extra spending money

Looks like an awesome deal to me!

Lightja…Take it and run…you could make some good $$ this summer at a job and try your best to have no debt.
OOS
Our EFC:$32,000
Unsub loans: 3,000
Sub loans: 2,500
grants/workstudy: 0
merit aid/private scholarships so far: 0
Dissappointed but not surprised…to all those OOS we need to accept that Michigan is a state insitutution that is obligated by law to first meet the needs of Michigan resident taxpayers. Many michigan residents are hurting financially in so many ways and their top students are likely much needier than usual…so the $$ left over for OOS is as we are all finding out: slim pickins. To all those parents who want to Whine about Fin Aid Pkgs…there is a great theraputic thread on the Parents Forum :)

Dang lightja, you must have had some awesome stats. Even with a scholarship, I don’t know any OOS who got enough grants to be almost debt free with a low EFC. Congrats!

In-State
EFC: About the cost of attendance for IS students.

Scholarships: $21,500
Loans (unsubsidized): $2000

Decision: Enrolling, but not accepting the loans. Couldn’t be happier!

Out-Of-State
FAFSA calculated EFC: ~$20,000

Scholarship:$1,000
Grants:$4,100
Loans:$5,500
Work-Study:$3000

Total: $33,600
CoA:$47,000

GAP: $13,400

Decision: Declining - hoping for a better offer from ‘100% need met school’ (if he gets in) or will be taking one of the better financial offers received.

any news on returning students aid packages?

the request for signed tax returns is up on WA and I’ve actually had them signed and will fax monday morning at 8

I certainly don’t know this for a fact, but it could be that financial aid offers do not include the Michigan Competitive Scholarship because of the uncertainty of state funding. As most know, last year the state failed to fund the Michigan Promise Scholarship leaving many students in a real bind. At this point the Michigan Competitive Scholarship has been funded at $510 a year for public schools (a 50% reduction from 2008-09 levels), but I would keep an eye on that funding as well given the financial condition of state government.

So are the aid notifications final? There are no more scholarships coming?

I think schoalrships could still come. The aid for me was just and estimate, but it should stay the same since all of my FAFSA data was accurate…

where did you guys find all of this info at, and how were you notified?

Does anyone know when the recipients of the Bell scholarship for LSA will be notified?

I’m asking for a friend…

I believe, all selected applicants for the Bell were notified on Feb 20th or earlier. I know, WAY ahead of the March 15th published notification date. (Overheard this at school, but I think it’s true).

I got my estimated Financial aid offer a couple days ago. I don’t know what to think, is it good? I’ve still to send in the tax returns.

-Instate
