I am a high school junior applying for college this fall, and had originally decided on going into Vocal Performance. Recently, I realized that I would love to be doing both MT and VP (I’m predominately a vocalist) but don’t know what places have good bridges between the two. I don’t want to be taught by graduate students, and I would love to be majoring in voice while still being able to do lots of MT. What schools are there really good cross over programs? What are the programs? Is there an application process for it or is it for anyone in the Music/Theatre Arts department? Any information on the mixture of VP and MT would be highly appreciated! Thank you
Oklahoma City University is a great program that allows you to double major in MT and VP. Private lessons are taught by faculty, not grad students. They require all VP and MT students to audition for both shows and operas. My daughter is starting there as a freshman in the fall. She was accepted for MT but may add the VP double major after first semester. Adding the VP program requires you to learn a lot more classical repertoire and do extra recitals.
OCU requires that you go to the school or you can submit a video audition. They do not attend unified auditions. They are also one of the only schools that asks to hear full songs rather than short cuts for your audition pieces and they require at least one classical selection. They take the time to get to know who you are and what you can do.
Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI, would allow a crossover program between MT and VP. A double major in both programs would be difficult (but potentially possible), but we have MT majors minoring in music (VP) who are perhaps more interested in opera performance/classical rep/recitals than some of their other MT peers. It’s a great option, as the Dept. of Theatre and Music Theatre and the Dept. of Music are very interdisciplinary–MTs can be cast in the operas and VPs can be cast in the musicals (in fact, my first Viterbo mainstage show as a MT major was our mainstage opera last semester). All voice lessons are taught by faculty.
Viterbo University does auditions on-campus for both programs, and there is some crossover on audition dates between the Music dept. and the Theatre dept. However, some students have been known to audition for MT and have been recommended (or redirected) to the VP program. The Theatre department also holds auditions at Unifieds for prospective MT majors.
My d is a rising sophomore at OCU who is a double major in VP and MT. It’s a wondrrful school and she has both classical and MT rep to learn each semester. And yes her teacher is a professorr -none of the MT or VP students are taught by grad assistants ( this was one of her requirements for where she went as well.) All MT and VP majors must audition for all musicals and operas. I have also heard really good things about crossover training / opportunities at Ithaca, James Madison and NYU Steinnhardt.

I am not an expert- but I don’t believe that there is crossover between vp and MT there. I have seen 4 BW musicals , and have never seen a non mt (meaning an acting or vp) major in one…
@toowonderful There was a VP major in Saturday Night Fever at BW this past spring.
@kategrizz - Thanks for the correction. Perhaps it is becoming more common- the last show I saw was Carousel in fall of 2013
I think VP majors can audition for the MT Certificate program at Northwestern University, and that all students can audition for all performances. I also know that our D, who was an MT, was also able to study classical voice while at NU.
