Where are you doing your community service? How many hours do you have racked up?

400+
For the past 9 years, I've been going to a chinese school on Sundays (it is exactly what it sounds like- a place where I "learn" chinese)... anyway they have this program where you can help out the school in the administrative office, etc, and I participate every Sunday (for the past 3 or so years) and get 3 hours a week for it. I'm relieved, because a lot of people at my school haven't even BEGUN the 75 hour requirement of service to graduate.

Now, I only have around 90 but this is only after my freshman year in Key Club. I'm planning on doing a lot more during the summer and I'll continue to volunteer throughout high school. I use Key Club as a way to get volunteer hours since there's a lot of activities.

I volunteer @ 2 organizations:

1) The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
2) Therapeutics Recreation (for mentally disabled kids and teens)

After freshman year I have 100 hours. Next year I want to get 250.

My old middle school

Freshman Year
-5 from Breast Cancer Walk
-10 from Church
-10 from Library
-I do reviews for the teen website
Total: 25 hours

Sophomore Year
-85 from Sunrise Assisted Living
-At first, I watched movies with residents (4/week) but now I play piano for the Reminiscence (Alzheimer's) unit for 2/week
-like 60+ hours for 17 reviews (My librarian says I can have as many as I want, but I still have to decide how many I need)
Total: 145 hours

Highschool Total: 170

I'm planning on doing a lot more, I'm pretty behind on hours...and I need a ton to join any honor societies. So, junior year.

Junior Year (Hypothetical)
-10+ Tutoring (at least)
-around 100 hours @ Sunrise (3, 3+ hrs/week)
-like 40+ hours for reviews (1/month, however many I fudge)
-10 from NHS (req'd)
-10 from Church

"and I need a ton to join any honor societies"

What honor societies are there? I just know of the Presidnetial Award.

children's hospital:

the lab, and the playroom

Okay, just asking since I don't want to start a new thread, but this is a general question for everyone: Why do you do community hours?

Is it because you need them to graduate or because you need them for college? How much can it increase your chances on a college app?

Thanks for any help!

IB Diploma requirement. Can't HURT in college admissions, eh? Local at-risk elementary school.

To cchscali, my school has crazy requirements to join the intra-school honor societies. Like, science for example...

95+ average in all science classes + 10 hours science volunteering before joining + 10 hours of in school tutoring after joining + 10 hours of in school labbing + 10 outside hours.

And there's Music Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Math Honor Society (which I'm NOT joining, it has double requirements than science!), and NHS which all have similar requirements.

why?

b/c....
it feels good to help (esp. sick little kids)

it looks great on college apps ( can't lie about that)

and i'm volunteering where i hope to spend most of my future life (in the hospital...want to be a surgeon).

Animal shelter. I have around 150 hours.

I have a whole lot of hours (cannot recall exactly how many right now), mostly from a hospital. I can't say it was a lot of fun, but it was certainly an educational experience.

Library (children's department) and District Attorney's office
250 hours

I volunteer through my church's youth group and a local community service organization run by teens in my town for the most part. My family also does service too, volunteering at a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as in the summer.

I do it because basically it's been expected of me forever, I think. I've been volunteering for my church for ages, before I even realized what community service was. My school recently introduced a community service requirement for graduation, but that didn't affect me at all. I'm recording basically the minimum number of hours because I don't care how many I have total. I don't add all my hours up because I don't do service to fulfill a requirement or to impress colleges with a number. It's about helping people.

It's great to especially volunteer in a position that will gain you insight on a future career that's interesting. My volunteering is quite similar to a job in many ways.

im starting at a hospital in the trauma nursing unit tomorrow. im pretty jazzed, the hospital is the only level 1 trauma center in norcal.

Uck, well, "prosperous," it's this crazy thing called DOING A GOOD THING FOR OTHER PEOPLE? Yeah, you shoud try it sometime. Yes, EVEN IF it's not required by school!!

Old elementary school (30 hours)
Head Start (350 hours)
Big Brother, Big Sister (100 hours)

For a total of a little under 500 hours.

Yeah, I like the widdle kiddies.

I'm volunteering this summer at a medical center's thoracic and cardiovascular institute. I'll have 80 hours of community service from this.
However, it's very intimidating, to say the least.
