I have a 4.0 weighted GPA, unsure about unweighted, and expect to get about a 30 on the ACT. I’ll have taken 4 AP classes by the time I graduate… I’m guessing this will get me the Dean’s Scholarship through Depaul. I was wondering if I could use this scholarship for housing or do I have to use it on Tuition? Thanks
Usually merit scholarships are for tuition. Why does it matter? You’ll get a big bill and have to pay it. If you have an outside scholarship that only allows it to be used for tuition, then it might matter, but are you in that position?
Daughter’s merit award is always applied to tuition first, but some other school grants can be used for room and board. The accounting office charges and credits all her billed amount about 100 times, but the merit money is always allocated to tuition, and the other grants and scholarships are split and applied to billed room and board, student fees, and other charges. That merit award is always just for tuition.
It’s up to the school how they apply it, and every school is different with stacking and applying their own funds and outside funds.
If you used it for housing, then what would pay for your tuition?
Your question is confusing. If I gave you $50 towards a new outfit, what difference would it make if you put the $50 towards the pants or the top? you’d still have to have money to buy both items.
I’m assuming I will be accepted to the Tuition Exchange, which would cover all my tuition and tuition only. So basically, I would want to put this scholarship on my housing since Tuition Exchange covers all tuition, but not housing. I was looking for a response from a DePaul student with a similar issue in the past, because their financial aid takes awhile to respond.
I wouldn’t count on it. Many tuition exchange programs do not allow the stacking, and limit the tuition to ~$34k (I don’t know what DePaul’s tuition is).
Did you ask on DePaul’s page?
DePaul is about 40k, and my school only will cover 34k so I guess the scholarship would be good for that, and I could always get others. Thanks for the suggestion though, sorry I just joined yesterday and didn’t know the best place to ask.
Thought I would update this in case anyone has a similar question, Depaul sent me an email saying: “Financial aid first pays tuition and fees. The remainder of financial aid will then be used to pay for room and board.”
You still need to ask if you can stack different types of scholarships and grants. Some schools allow students to have both tuition benefits/tuition exchange PLUS the merit scholarships, others do not. I noticed on DePaul’s scholarship page that music and art scholarships are not stackable with dean’s scholarship, so I’d be cautious. It’s up to the school. A friend’s daughter was given a merit scholarship, but when she applied for the tuition benefit, the school took away the merit scholarship (tuition benefit was higher amount). Others on CC have posted that their children did get both the tuition exchange and any merit scholarship from the school.
You just need to determine if DePaul will let you have both.
