current school: de anza
majors applied to: haas at ucb and econ at ucla
gpa: 3.97 (4.0 @ time of fall update, got 1 A- in winter quarter)
ec’s: quite a few mediocre ones and perhaps 1 slightly above-average
essays: not that great…

i don’t know which major’s better…but i know i like econ better and i am more genuinely interested in learning the subject matter, also, i think i beat trasferus in random doubles, i’m on track to double major in bio and econ if i don’t get in this year (2 subjects i’m greatly interested in and i’m probably still trying to delay my future career choice lol), oh, and i’m only applying to haas for the prestige that goes with the name, if i get in i fully intend to double major with econ

“thebigsh0w - i dont know about econ being harder(academic wise) than business econ or admin…”

From what I understand, business econ is just econ with some accounting courses. I don’t know if they take as much economics classes as an economics major.

I would say econ and business econ are comparable, but econ/math is a lot harder.

And business admin is on the bottom. It is easy man.

With Accounting firms such as KMPG EY Deloitte and PwC, they don’t bother recruiting from regular Econ at Cal…simply because you cannot practice audit and tax without your CPA.

With other industries such as management consulting, reputation probably matters more. However, I would still say stick with Biz Econ because it’s easier to tell interviewers that you will be getting your CPA soon and you can analyze financial statement while regular econ students can’t even distinguish statement of cash flows from income statement.

I got an internship with a bulge bracket bank by stressing the importance of accounting…while many econ students from the Ivy League got rejected.

My point is…accounting has its value and I would not sacrifice it over a slight difference in reputation.

But with Haas and biz econ…the answer is obvious.

If you wanna take 3 classes of calculus or more, go econ. I used to hate math until i did some stuff and now it makes sense.

I totally agree with Biz admin being easier because of the less intense math required and how biz admin is an overview. But if you’re naturally not a person who loves the required math or accounting or any classes associated with its respective major; don’t kid yourself.

does it even matter (assuming we all get accepted into upenn grad for mba lulz) if we major in bizadmin or bizecon/econ if we are going to receive an mba anyways?

also bizecon major requires you to take classes taht qualifies you for CPA. two bird with one stone : ]

This really shouldn’t be such a fight between majors…if Business Econ/Econ will teach you what you need for your path, then that is the path you take. If Business Admin corresponds with your career path, by all means, choose it.

I want to challenge anyone that says taking econ/business econ is better than business admin for an entrepreneur like myself. It just isn’t the right major for that!

Likewise, I won’t argue with someone who wants to be, say a CPA or go into any other finance related field–for this obviously one would choose business econ/econ…

and if business admin is “easier” (I get the feeling easier just means less math intensive), then whatever.

THE MAIN THING IS THAT IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO DO LATER IN LIFE!

again, though, you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you don’t get into a bus. admin program (if that’s what you really needed) because like uctrasfer said, you can always network and get similar schooling in grad school.

As a side theory: that’s probably why they make it so hard to get into business admin majors in the first place. They want to make sure the people they accept know their math/logic ahead of time…so time isn’t wasted trying to teach it ;)

I came to UCI as a freshman…I took the AP Calc BC test in high school and got a 3 on it, so this waived me from taking Calc 2A (the 1st part of calc)…I did, though, have to take the second part (Calc 2B) and that was it…the only other math class I had to take was Math 4, which was titled math for economists…I don’t think Math 4 = Calc 3 though

“I want to challenge anyone that says taking econ/business econ is better than business admin for an entrepreneur like myself. It just isn’t the right major for that!”

You don’t have to have a particular major to be an entrepreneur. If anyone asked me what major I would choose for entrepreneurship, I would tell them to pick what you like.

I am also interested in entrepreneurship and have experience with it.

I just happen to be more curious and appreciative of economics more than a general business degree. Like I stated, I know financial, managerial accounting and basic business principles.

And trying to pinpoint entrepreneurship to a specific major is just nonsense. Likewise, saying economics is a bad degree for entrepreneurship is also not correct.

As for you guys talking about calculus, calculus is not one of the hardest math classes math/econ students have to take. I am worried about real analysis, abstract algebra, advanced calc, or stochastic calc.

u guys know u dont even need a degree to be an entrepreneur. it just takes a focused head with some experiences and you can have your multinational corporation running in no time.
