Hi, im a junior, i was looking at a copy of the common app. there was a section which asked where your parents went to school. do colleges only use that to see if you have legacy, or do they also consider it in the general admissions process. my dad went to IIT (indian institute of technology); does that possibly put me at an adv in some tech schools like cmu, caltech, and MIT?...haha i doubt it but it woudl be cool if it was true.

No - they are really just looking for legacy standing and to find out if you are a first generation college student. The fact that your dad went to a great school is not going to impact your admission at the schools you mentioned.

... Wow, juniors start this already? ...

Eager beavers. But then again. This is CC. What am I saying...

haha wow... i didn't start until about... october senior year. ::headdesk::

HAHA highfive Pongo.

Does it matter if one of the parents didn't go to college? My mom didn't, my father did

the same was true for me - my mom didnt, my dad did - and i got into my first choice, but i doubt i wouldnt have gotten in even if my mom had gone to harvard.

"... Wow, juniors start this already? ...

Eager beavers."

haha... I'm a sophomore, and already worrying about this stuff >_<

no advantage....
My dad went to IIT too...

It doesn't really matter that much where or if only one of your parents went to college. It is to see legacy status and gauge education level of parents. There isn't an extra effect if only one went to college, that does not make you a first generation college student.
