Where Should Freshmen Live?

Hi! I’m a high school senior who has recently been accepted into The Ohio State university. I’ve been looking at housing lately, but I’m not sure where the best place for freshmen is.

I like North Campus best.

Is Taylor tower ONLY an honors dorm?
Can freshmen stay at Jones Tower?
Do freshmen always have to live in quads?

Any and all advice is welcome. I know next to nothing about freshman housing.

Thanks in advance! :)

I also am considering North campus.

I am pretty sure freshmen can stay at Jones and freshmen do not always have to live in quads.

I’m a freshman at OSU and I’ll give you the lowdown. Basically North Campus is more quiet and I guess you could say “nerdy” than the other campuses. North Campus also has a lot of international students, mainly Asian. They’re not really a problem and the ones I’ve met are really nice and open about talking about their backgrounds but they mostly keep to themselves(not trying to sound racist or anything). The dining options are o.k as you have the North Commons dining hall and there are some off campus options near you. North Campus is also right next to most if not all of your classes so you should keep this in mind. There’s also a decent sized gym on North Campus.

West Campus is kind of far from everything but its close to the RPAC and the Stadium, and I guess it’s the closest place to the Schott(basketball/ice hockey arena). Morrill commons also doesn’t have the best food as I’ve heard. I heard it’s pretty fun to live on West Campus but it’ll be a little bit harder for you to make friends that don’t live in your dorm(thankfully there are a lot of people in your dorm so it shouldn’t be too bad).

South campus(where I live) is in my opinion the best place to live. You have the best dining options, decent proximity to classes(10-15 minute walk max) and it’s very social. It’s also a lot louder/more social on South campus espeacially in two of the newer dorms which are Park-Stradley and Smith-Steeb. Those are known as the “party dorms”. It’s also in good proximity to off-campus housing which is where most of the house parties/bars are. Keep in mind that you can still get work done, I lived in one of the renovated halls(Siebert) and I got around a 3.5 this semester, it’ll just be a little louder because people are more social. There’s also a decent-sized gym on south campus.

Basically if you want a quiet/academic focused area North Campus is your best bet. But if you want a mix of everything South Campus is definitely the way to go. I wouldn’t really see any reason why you would want to live on West, unless your in a learning community but it still isn’t that bad to live there.

Also South Campus is overwhelmingly Freshmen, while North seems to pretty mixed, and I don’t know too much about West but I think its mostly Freshmen. Freshmen also can’t live off campus unless they commute.

So yeah I hope I helped.

This totally helped! I would really like to focus on my studies, so I think North Campus would be the best fit for me. Do you know how many freshmen live in Jones tower?

North campus is mostly quads, right? What are the chances of a freshman getting a double (or super double) on north?

Jones Tower is mostly singles, which is very appealing to me. That’s why I’m curious as to how many Freshmen actually live there.

Ah yeah, I like the “studious” atmosphere of north campus but I’m not really fond of living in a quad or by myself. I think having one roommate would be best for me. I think I may end up having to go south campus.

I really want to live at Jones Tower, too. The only people I have known who lived in quads as freshmen were in an Honors or Scholars program.

For sure gonna try to live on south campus!! Good food and parties…done deal for me!

^^ I assume that Park-Stradley & Smith-Steeb are two of the best dorms for freshman in South right?

Son is in Engineering and lives on South Campus in Patterson. He is happy to be in South but wishes he was in one of the newer larger dorms, Park-Stradley or Smith. He thinks it would have been much easier to meet people.

3anddone, does your son have a long walk to his classes living on South Campus, or is the distance not too bad?

When do incoming freshman start making housing arrangements? I haven’t gotten a decision yet and I don’t want to be at the end of the process

@jbuck7 - He has never complained about the walk, not really an issue.

@EllenTaylorr I’m not too sure, as I live on South Campus I don’t know too much about North and I only really go there for classes/late night dinner(at burritos, you must check this place out). But I’m sure theres a decent of freshmen there.

@AJOhio Yea it’s mostly quads. And I’m not too sure because as stated before I don’t live on North but quads aren’t bad at all.

@goldenbear1616 They are two of the new 3 on South Campus and they are very nice. they are really social and really fun atmospheres to live in.

@ellen taylor this past year my freshman son requested a double in Taylor but got a quad. Yes Taylor is all Honors. He loves Taylor but he does not “party”. Previous poster would describe him and his friends- probably hos entire floor as nerds. His RA enforces the no alcohol policy.

@coola426 You mentioned Park-Stradley is known as a party dorm? Isn’t that where the Health Science Scholars live

Just because it’s where scholars live doesn’t mean they don’t party… You can get good grades along with having a good time

I know that believe me. I wanted verification that they actually do live there because I was having a hard time finding it on the campus map.
