I'm going to be applying to colleges this fall and I really have no idea what schools I should be looking at. Some of my stats are above average and others are mediocre or even below average (GPA and ECs especially). I'm feeling really disillusioned right now because I slacked off and idk where I can realistically apply anymore lol. Any ideas?

GPA: 3.6 UW < our system's really screwed up. all i actually know is that i have a 96.85/105 weighted (which isn't particularly good). i'm assuming that a 3.6 is the worst case scenario.
SAT I: 2300 (700M, 800 CR)
SAT IIs: 800 Literature, 800 Math II, 720 Bio
i'm taking the physics in october & hopefully getting 750+
& my PSAT was high enough that i'm definitely qualifying as a semi-finalist in NY

Courseload:
freshman yr - all honors + world history AP
sophomore yr - AP stats + all honors
junior yr - physics b, bc calc, ap lang & comp, ap us
senior - ap latin, multivariable calc, ap literature, ap gov & politics, ap chem

ECs:
- editor of school paper 11 & 12th
- member of wind ensemble
- 95+ on clarinet auditions 8-11th grade
- vocal music for 12 years & done multiple performances
- sci o 9th & 10th grade
- national honors society
- participated in a service camp in baltimore (?)

Other:
if it matters, i know my teacher recs will be really flattering (i asked teachers that liked me and they seemed genuinely eager to write them). and i've already written one of my essays as a final project in english this year and according to my teachers and peers it's very well written and engaging.

i'm not looking at ivies or anything, but i'd still like to know what relatively competitive schools i can realistically aspire to gain acceptance to.

bump
here’s a tentative list of schools im looking @

Safeties: Stony Brook
SUNY Binghamton

Matches: BC, BU, NYU, Lehigh, ???

Reaches: ??
Carnegie Mellon (applying because yolo)

as you can see it’s mostly blank lol

hi hey hello is anyone thereeeeeee :D

i’m slowly coming up with a list on my own. anyone wanna chance me?

Stony Brook
Geneseo
Lehigh
University of Michigan
Emory
Carnegie Mellon
NYU Sterns
University of Maryland
Northeastern
UC Berkley
USC

Stony Brook - Safety
Lehigh - match
University of Michigan - match
Emory - reach
Carnegie Mellon - reach
NYU Sterns - match
University of Maryland - safety
Northeastern - match
UC Berkley - reach
USC - reach

I’m not really sure on geneseo.

You got an 800 on the Literature SAT? That’s awesome! Could you give a future taker tips on that?

Anyway, I would say you judged your chances for those schools about right in your second post. Don’t sell yourself short, and don’t beat yourself up (too) much.

You’re missing alot of important information. What do you intend to major in? How much can your family afford? Is money no object? Specific school size, region, population, type?

Need a little more details. I would agree with the above on reaches. Your GPA hurts you, but your test scores are amazing. My son has a higher GPA, but didn’t do as well on SATII =(

University of Michigan is more of a reach than a previous poster indicated, I think. I’m in state, and I some high schoolers with 4.0 UW don’t get in with a more hefty AP course load. It’s certainly worth a shot, though.

Your sat is great. You will get in to all of these places.

@Progressivism
don’t read too many review books if you can help it lol. i know that sounds kinda silly but i took it blind and ended up doing considerably better than my friends that stressed out over it. it’s a fairly easy test, you just have to trust yourself and avoid second guessing yourself. it sounds super cliche to say it, but go with your gut!! i’m sure you’ll do really well : D

hmm for additional info:
i’m looking for competitive schools that have decent reputations. i’d like to major in either applied math, computer science or chemistry…not sure which yet haha. bigger schools in urban areas appeal more to me.

my parent’s are only willing to pay a tuition of 40k+ if the school is fairly prestigious. they’d be willing to pay for umich, for example,

@sagacioustud
wow, that’s kinda surprising.
i’d considered it a match because on my school’s website graph thingy (lol) it shows that my GPA and SAT are above the average that’s accepted there. maybe they were applying to programs that were really competitive there?
